In the Senate yesterday, Hon. Mr. Abbotc presented a correspondence bet ween Governor Angers and the Governor Gen- eral, It is a copy of t':e letter of remon- strance addressed by Angers to Mercier regarding the Bay Chaleur scandal. After reciting the facts as revealed before the Senate Committee, Governor Angers adds : ‘It would seem that there exists between the Government and the creditors of the Province a gate at which tribute must be paid before justice is done to those who are claimants for justice.” He He then demands explanations about the Bay Chaleurs affair and the appointment of a royal commission to enquire into the whole transaction, naming Judges Jette, Baby and Davidson, and he concludes by saying that ‘until further orders, I also call on you to limit the action of the Gov- ernment to the urgent accouarts of the ad- ministration, and | revoke the nomination of the deputy Lieutenant Governor” (ap- pointed to sign money warrants) ** and I beg you to give notice of the revocation tu whom it concerns.”

The loss of life and destruction of pro- perty by the floods in Spain is truly appal- ing. The worst is not yet known. One estimate places the death list at two thou- sand. There will be months of terrible privation and extreme suffering before the utterly impoverished survivors. The crops are gone, cattle swept away, houses and household furniture ruined—all that would enable them to earn their bread bas vanish- ed beneath the torrents of water which rulled over town, village, field and farm. At Almeria, the capital of the Province of that name, over 500 houses were destroy- ed, and a large number of people perished. Public collections are being made for the relief of the survivors.
