FISHERY COMMISSIONERS AWARD.

THE

McKenzie, Blake and fellows, the fisheries of Canada were not quite “given away by Sir John McDon- ald.” The amount to be received for them is, however, little enough.

it says:—

‘‘The impertance to the whole Dominion, as well as to the Provinces themselves, of such a movement successfully carried through could scarcely be overrated. It would give in- creased weight to the Provinces, would effect a great saving in expenditure, and make a large amount of local talent available for higher purposes than those by which it is at present absorbed. In every point of view the waole Dominion has good reason to wish the move- ment success.”

Srr,—An ** Ex-Crown Law Officer” has hit a decided blot in our criminal procedure, or rather non-procedure.

It is a matter of common observation at the Bar that a prisoner has everything to gain and notking to lese by breaking jail.

At present the Sheriff of King’s County is engaged in pursuing an escaped convict. Pro- clamations and notices give information as to his appearance, and place the public upon the alert ; and probably he will be recaptured, But the only result to him will be that he will have shortened his term of tnprisonment, so that even if caught he will be a gainer.

It is well for him that his crime was not com- mitted when our present worthy Governor Sir Robert Hodgson was Attorney General, for at the very next term after his capture he would have been indicted for his offence,

The days when men did their duty have gone, but I hope not forever,

Sin,—I haye often thought that the ad« vocates ae ree Trade’ need not advance argumeyts to support their views; for tho adduced by Protectionists are yéually suicidal. | The letter of A Merchant in to-day’s EXAMINER is acase in point. Some litile while ago you allowed me in your columns to point out the injustice of the tax upon Commercia! Traveliers, which is a form of protection; and now A Merchani—while objecting to this particular tax—proposes another, which would be protection with a vengence. It is noless then that the City Council should assume the powers of the Dominion Parliament, and levy “a tax on goods consigned tobe sold _ by auc- tion! ! In other words, establish a special customs duty of our »wn in this city, and so protect the ordinary merchant. If this is done, our shoemaker’s should demand that a tax be levied on all shoes brought from elsewhere into Charlottetown, Tail- or’s, Cabinet maker’s &c., will make the same demand. 3ut Charlottetown having done this, every other city should do the same; every country district should follow suit ; and then when nobody could buy anything except what was made and produced in his own im- mediate neighborhood, and all eommerce was destroyed, we should all be protected, and therefore all be rich, prosperous and happy.

if ‘“‘A Merchant” was acquainted with the constitution of his country, he would know that such a city bye-law would be wholly un- constitutional, and that such a tax as he pro- poses could never be levied ; but his letter may be a very useful one, if it shows the reductio ad absurdum to which protectionist principles, logically followed out, lead.

A Constantinople despatch says Mr. Layard, the British ambassador, demanded the aboli- tion of exceptional permits to ‘foreign vessels, threatening, if not granted, that England will refuse to recognjze the ?‘lack Sea blockade.

News from Servia is very warlike.

‘The Russian loss at the battleof Pergor was 1,300.. A despatch from Turkish sources Says a Rusrian cavalry regiment was completely destroyed near Entrepol.

Rumors at most of the continental capitals are that Russia is willing to entertain peace propositions. ‘Tkere isa rumor at Paris that fingland has sent an ultimatum to Russia.

GENERAL NEWS.

THE SITUATION IN GREECE, ATHENS, Nov. 24. In consequence of the recent speeches in Parliament the Ministry have resigned. The King has refused to accept their resignation, and the crisis continues. The population have become very warlike since the late Russian victories, Liverpoo., Nov. 24. The works for the new docks at Liverpool are so damaged by the recent galt, 42 acres of excavation being flooded, that it is feared 2,700 men will be thrown out of work for three weeks.

UNITED STATES. STEAMER LOST WITH 134 LIVE3S—THE FISHERY COMMISSIONERS’ AWARD—HEAVY FLOODs, Norroik, Va., Nov. 25. The United States steamer Huron, with 134 souls, went ashore on Saturday morn- ing about 10 o’clock off Life Saving Station No. 7, near Oregon Inlet, on the North Carolina coast. Wrecking steamer Resos lute was despatched to her assistance. Admiral Frenchard sent the U.S: steamer Swatara and the tug Fortune to render as~- sistance. Later information says she has gone to pieces under an unusually heavy sea. Many bodies washed ashore; 34 per- sons saved. The following are the only ones whose names are known: Past Ass sistant Paymaster, Saunders; Past Assist- ant Engineer, Derig; Cadet Engineer, Warburton; and Ensign Young. Storm signals were flying three days, and itis thought strange this warning should have been disregarded.
