Notices have been sent from the War Office to sixty-one towns in the Kingdom, including some in Ireland, ordering the military authorities te prepare for immedi- ate calling out of reserves. It is believed that a summons will be issued before the end of the week.

Gon. Mr. Mackenzie as a “Land Shark.’
A land company has been organized under the name of the British Canadian Colonization Company, with a capital of one million dollars. It has acquired one hundred thousand acres of land in the Qu’ Appelle district. The odd thing about it is that the Hon. Mr. Mackenzie is pre- sident of it. No one has more freely denounced land companies than Mr. Mac- kenzie, unless it be Mr, Blake, and the grit platformt on that question has been laid down as being ‘‘the land for the settler, and the price for the people. The fact that prominent grits have taken shares in land companies while the leaders of the party have been declaiming in Parliament against these, puts the leaders avd. their followers in antagonism. The effect is to seriously hamper Mr. Blake’s hands. Every point he makes against land com- panies in the North West will be weakened by the fact that the ex leader of the grit party and some of his colleagues have gone into land speculation themselves, perhaps on the principle that they may as well have a share of what is going as let the Tories have it all.—Toronto Telegram.

India has nearly 20,000,000 acres sown to wheat.
The wheat prospects throughout the country are improving, and an immense yield is anticipated.
Wastefulness treads on the heels of ex- travagance, and the model farmer wii] not tolerate either on his premises.

The present high prices are convincing proofs that farmers have not been able to overstock the market yet. There is plenty of room for more farmers in this country.
Permanent pastures should consist of mixed grasses in order to satisfy the desire and pecularities of animals. A variety does much in the matter of promoting health and thrift.
An army worm is reported to be playing sad havoe with the meadows in the vicinity of St. Louis. In Southern Illnois the wheat crop is reported damaged one-third, and the worm is now eating the heads of the grain.
It is now beyond doubt that the annnal rings of wood in trees are not a sure index of the age, as the gum tree of Australia, as is now proved, makes two circles a year. Some of the extravagant stories of the ages of trees wil! need rewriting.
