TH annual general meeting of the Stock- holders in the St. Lawrence Marine Insurance Company was held yesterday, when the fol- lowing gentlemen were elected Directors for the ensuing year :

Mr. Kennedy was afterwards clected Presi- dent of the Board.

THe Cuatnam Depatine Cive will discuss *“*The Local Situation” on Friday night. The doors will be thrown open to the public. This Society has now been in operation six months, and it has not lost any of its vigor in the dis- cussion of the questions which have occupied its attention. We believe it is the intention on Friday night week to discuss ‘‘The desir- ability of having a representative of the me- chanics in the Legislature’”—a live question, and one that will, just now, excite a good deal of interest.

LAST EVENING the Very Rev. Dr. Mc- Donald delivered a lecture before the mem- bers of St. Patrick’s T. A. Society, en ‘*Fond Reminiscences.” ‘The hall was crowded on the occasion, and the lecture was listened to throughout with marked at- tention. The rev. lecturer gave a brief description of the idiosyncracies of many of the great professors of the Propaganda, as well as many of the distinguished Catholic prelates with whom he had formed an inti- mate acquaintance during his stay at Rome. At the close, a vote of thanks was tendered the rev. lecturer, and short addresses were delivered by Messrs. John Caven, James

Reddin and P. R. Bowers.

Cu4raamM Deaatine Socrety.—The regular weekly meeting of this Society was held in Fall’s Hall, on Friday last, at 8. p.m. ‘The subject for debate wa;, ‘‘Would it be better to havea Republican than a Monarchial form of Government.” After a lively and interesting discussion, a vote was taken, resulting in a majority in favor of the Republican. Several members of the Normal School Debating Club were present, and took part in the debate. The subject for next Friday is a political one, ‘Has the legislation of the late government been such as should receive the support of the people of this- Province. An invitation is tendered to the representatives of the city press to attend the meetings of the Society.

An Overpve VessEt.—The brigantine Kate Upham, Rouse, master, sailed from St. John on the 14th of January for Matanzas, and has not been heard from since. She is now fifty tive days out, while she should have gone down to Cuba in 20 or 25 days. The ‘‘K. U.” is 299 tons register and was built at Dorchester in 1864. She is owned by A. L. Palmer, Esq., and is uninsured. Captain Alfonso T. Rouse, of St. John, is master, and the crew is composed of, —

The vessel had a cargo of lumber, shipped by Messrs. A Cushing & Co., which was in- sured. The vessel was thorougbly repaired before leaving port.

Art the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court, this forenoon, the case ot William Bevan vs. Hugh McUVarron and Patrick McCourt, came up tor trial. It appears that Bevan entered the Re- form Club billiard room and asked McCourt —who was drunk—‘* Who won the last game of billiards?" McCourt answered : ‘*‘ Whats that to you?”’ Bevan said: ‘It is no harm to ask a question.” Then McCourt said : ‘I'll let you know gwhat harm it is,” and, saying so, he struck Bevan. A lively fight followed. McCarron interfered and struck Bevan in the face. Through McCarron’s influence, the row ended. ‘The Magistrate asked McCourt what he had to say to the charge. McCourt replied that he was drunk; that that he did not know what he was doing; that he got the liquor in the cellar funder the Reform Club, atid that the liquor was given to him by- four or five fellows who were drinking there. He also said there was liquor there nearly every | night. McCourt was tined $2 and costs, or 8 days, and McUarron was discharged. ,

It was proposed by the Committee to call for tenders for a new contract.

A serious and probable premature insur- rection of a Turkish village in Osman Bazar’s district is reported. A _ detach- ment of Cossacks were attacked by insur- gents and lost several nen, but repulsed the assaults. Two battalions of infantry and a mitrailleuse battery were despatched to the scene.

The British fleet in the sea of Marmora has been instructed to sail for Besika Bay at daylight on Wednesday.

Sir,—I am glad Mr. McKechnie admits the charges contained in my letter of the 10th inst., except that part of it which ‘‘ inginuates that coal only was taken from the Railway” by him without being paid for. He does not deny that be drew ‘'wenty Dollars per month for the use of his team, which was driven by Jimmy Morgan at the public ex- pense; and that, in order to get the money without its being known, he made use of the Express Manager and his friend Jimmy.

He does not deny that he charged Thirty Dollars per month travelling expenses, when he paid no such amount, or that he appropri- ated to his own use that commodious piece of furniture which could not have cost less than Fifty Dollars.

That Mr. McKechnie should deny he got coal from the Railway without paying for it, is strange, indeed; for when I was there it was well known that he claimed a right to have it, and took it. But I am now intormed he was afterwards made tu pay. for that part of it which was entered. Perhaps Mr. Mc- Kechnie will say that coal was never given him without being charged at the time of delivery.” if so, will he tell us why, in January last, he rushed iu to pay for and get entered coal de- livered more than a year ago? Was it be- cause he expected an inquiry? I hope Mr. McKechnie will answer these questions, while he is in the mood to ‘‘notice newspaper articles,’

He might, at the same time, say who got the tweed suits which it was said at the time were charged and paid for as clothing for con- ductors?
