Of the hundreds and thousands that leave our Dominion for the Great Republic south of us, the vast majority make no fortune, and simply continue to battle hard for daily b:esd. They probably do no better and no worse than they would do had they remained at home. Some, by industry, enterprise and perseverance, rise to the crest of the wave. These would “rise” anywhere. There ia plenty of room and scope in the Dominion for all the genius, capital, brain and muscle that can be set to work amongst us.

The Hudson Bay Company has just print- ed for distribution in Great Britain and Ireland and the older provinces of Canada and the United States an excellent little pamphlet, giving a fund of information respecting Manitoba. Accompanying the pamphlet is a well executed map of Mani- toba showing all the townships surreyed by the Federal! Government. An intioduc- tion states that the Hudson Bay Company owns about seven million acres af land in the great fertile belt, and now offers for sale about ire hundred thousand acres in the townships already surveyed.

Canada is henceforth to be represented in London by Sir Alexander Galt as ‘‘Min- ister for Canada.” This a new departure, and a very wiso one. We hope Sir Alex- ander will be long spared to fill the post with honor to himself and advantage to the country. Heis aman of sound judgment, great prudence, vast information. He is patriotic and loyal. He likes public life and adorns it. He has been fully equal te the duties of any position he has been called npon to vecupy. As a finance manager, as an observant agent, his pres: ence in Lon:ton will be of great value to the Dominion.
