EASTERN PAINTED TURTLE FOUND

Last spring two children, Victoria and David Kayo, found a large (approx. 7" long and 5" wide) eastern painted turtle at the Southport Fish Hatcheries Pond. It had crawled up on shore and was sunning itself when the kids found it. They took pictures, then let it go, but they've seen it several times since. There's probably only the one, and perhaps it was brought from out of province and released, but it seems to have set up housekeeping at the pond.

UPCOMING MEETINGS

January: Margaret Mallett, secretary of the Natural History Society will present a slide presentation on Nighthawks.

This is our annual neeting and the executive will be elected then, so be sure to make it if you can.

February: This month's speaker 'is Tom Sephton speaking on 'The Sex Life of a Bar Clam'. Sounds too good to miss!

March: The March guest speaker is Brian Hearn talking about the subject of his recently carpleted Master's thesis, the Arctic Hare.

April: Tentatively schedualed in April is a slide presentation by Dr. Lawson Drake, Dean of Science at U.P.E.I. The topic has not been decided yet, but we have had Dr. Drake speak to us before andithasbeengreateverytimeandI am sure this one will be the same.

May: Like previous years, My is our _ annual photo contest. The judge has not been decided yet and there will be more details in the newsletter as the date approaches. This is just a reminder to get out there and take some nice winter shots to enter in the contest.

CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT

As usual, the Christmas Bird Counts will beheldthisyearinlateDecemberand early January. It's lots of fun and everyone is welcome to come. The dates are: National Park Count - Dec. 21; Hillsborough Count - Dec. 28; and Montague Count - Jan. 4. The potluck for the National Park Count will be held at Jane Synmes home, in Bonshaw (for directions call Jane at 675-4806) and the potluck for the Hillsborough Count will be at Rosemary Curley's in Waterside (651-2585). The host of the potluck in Montague is still T.B.A. , There will be no cost for the National Park or Montague counts but there will be a $3.00 charge for the Hillsborough Count if you wish your results to be tabulatedandyournameappear inthe publication. In case of bad weather, the counts will be held on the following days (Sundays). For further information about the counts contact Rosemary Curly at 651-2585.

ELECTIONS
