isn't satisfied with killing just one chicken. He will sometimes kill many when one is far more than he can use. If he gets into the home of the Mouse family. or one CII the Squirrel family. or one of the Rabbit family. he kills father and mother and all the children it he has the chance. so that is why little Sha- dow, so small that he looks almost harmless, is one that is most feared or all the hunters in either iur or feathers.

Spite the Marten had oome down to the Green Forest trom the Great Mountain because up there the hunting was so very poor that he was almost starving. It is oiten t-hat way in winter cm the Great Mountain. Croaker the Raven had come down to the Green Forest for the same reason. Both had tried to catch Chatterer the Red Squirrel, That was Ohutteter's good luck. Each got in e way of the other and so neither caught him. when they separated spite started back toward the Great Mountain. on the way he surprised and caught a fully grown young Grouse. Now that was even better dinner than Chat- terer the Red Squirrel would have been. When Spite was thrcvughtwitn that dinner there was nothing iett but leathers and the legs. spite had had enough. He no longer wanted to hunt. Shortly after he started on his way he surprised one of the children at Jumper the Hare. Now if his small cousin, Shadow the Weasel. had been in his place he would have killed that Here just for the run. Spite did nothing more than give the Hare a sudden (right. and chuckled as he watched him bound away llppity lip. Just then who should come along but Gray Fox. He had been following the trail in the snow lert by that Hare. When Gray Fox saw spite he stop- ped.
