Three Brave Boys.
In a cornerofan English museum stands a hollow gourd containing some curious wooden type. ‘They are cur- ious because they are double-faced. They were sent out from England for use in the mission press at Uganda, in Central Africa ; but the resident mis— sionary; Alexandcr Mackay, finding them unsuitable, cut other letters upen them, so that they might be used re- versed.
The press in which they were used had been in existence several years, under the somewhat uncertain patron— age of King Mtesa; but when this monarch died, in October, 1884, heavy clouds soon gathered round the native converts and their heroic teacher, Mr. Mackay. The new king, Mwanga, was bitterly opposed to the missionaries for he supposed that they had_ ulterior designs upon his kingdom. As _ soon, therefore, as he came to the throne, the Christians knew that their lives were in imminent peril.
A tale was spread that the missionary was in communication with the king’s enemies, and he was promptly seized together with the boys employed at the mission press. Mackay got off; but all his efforts failed to save the lives of some of his native boys.
Here is his own brief account of the awful tragedy: They were taken, with Kakumba and Mr. Ashe’s boy, and also Serwanga, a tall fine fellow, who had been baptised. These three were then tortured, their aims were cut

While they thus endured the slew agony of roasting, the executioner and is men stood by, laughing and challenging them to pray now to ‘Isa Masiya (Jesus Christ), and asking if they thought he could save them.
Then those brave martyr-boys lifted up their heads, and looked up through the smoke to the cloudless sky above, and started singing praises to Him who loved them and gave Himself for them unti! their dry and shrivelled mouths could no longer utter a sound.
In the whole history of missions there 1s not a more pathetic scene than that of three black boys, singing hymns of praise while being slowly roasted to death. It is not surprising to hear that the conduct oi these martyrs made a deep impression upon the by- standers, and one of the executioners came forward and begged to be taught the Christian religion.— Exchange.
