Dearu By Drowning, —A sad affair occurred on Saturdey night, on the road between Hibernia and Tracey’s settlenents, in the eastern partof St. John County, N. B It appears that Francis McUianney, a man about 80 years old, and his son, who liveia Coleraine, Parish of St. Martins, were in St. John on Saturday. They started to drive home during the day. At dusk they were at the finger post of Gardiner’s Creek and Hibernia Settle- ment roads. Instead of tollowing up Gardiner’s Creek road, McGanney took a winter road between Hibernia and Trac y’s settlements. While crossing a brook the sled suddenly canted and threw the two men into the water. A bag of oats fell on the old man’s neck and anotner bag fell on his back—holding him in the water until he had drowned. The young man crawled out and finally reached Mr. Donnelly’s house, . " 9 On Sunday searchiag parties went out, and finally the old man’s body was discovered by George Bedford. The horse and sled were found in the woods, McGanney’s remains were removed to his late residence, and Coroner Ruddock, of Quaco, was notified.— Globe.

The Lord Mayor of London has issued an appeal for subscriptions to relieve distress in the Western Islands of Scotland.
Reports from the central portion of the [llinots State indicate that a cold snap has damaged early sown wheat and seriously affected the peach prospect.
A large employer at Birkenhead has dis- charged all his Irish workmeu, declaring that he would no longer disgrace himself by employing people who foster assassins.
A band of Arabs, on the 19th, attacked four Ottoman battalions, near Yemen, Turkey. ‘The Turks lost four officers and a number of soldiers, killed and wounded. The Arabs were repulsed.
Sixty miners at St. Elimo, on the 20th, attempted to rescue a comrade from gen- darmes, who used their weapons, and a miner was mortally wounded. Several arrests wore made aud great excitement prevails.
Felix Goudreau, a French-Canadian, 59 years of age, was arrested at Manchester, N. H., on the 20th, for Haverhill, Maas., ofticers, charged with the crime of incest with his 1l-year-old daughter. He was taken to Haverhill on the afternoon train.
Two dynamite depots have been dis- covered in St. Petersburg. Forty persons were arrested. The week's arrests number 200, including pupils of military schools and railway officials. The Government has resolved to expel Italians who are without permanent occupation.
At a meeting of the Cabinet at Windsor, on the 20th, Lord Carlingford took his seat as Lord President of the Council in place of Lord Spencer resigned. Lord Carlingford will also assume the duties of Minister of Agriculture which are combined with those of ford President.
The steamer Boston City, which arrived at Halifax on the 20th from London, reports on March 16th, in a dense fog on the Banks. she collided with the schooner Fanny, of Liverpool, for St. John’s, Nfld., damaging four plates, carrying away the bridge work, boats, davits and rails. The schooner lost her bowsprir, cutwater and all head-gear, but asked for no assistance.
At a special meeting of the Charity Organizing Society to Promote Emigration, in London, a letter from Sir Alexander Galt, High Commissioner for Canada, was read. The writer said the Canadian Gov- ernment would not sanction emigration to Canada of habitual paupers. She was willing to absorb destitute boys and girls in reasonable numbers, to provide a periodical inspection of them and a record of their disposal.
In the French Deputies, on the 19th, a Radical motion relating to grievances of the mining population, was rejected by the adoption of the order of the day, pure and simple, by a vote of 294 to 116. With re- spect to a motion granting amnesty to pol- tical press offenders, M. Waldock Ros- seaux, Minister of the Interior, insisted that the present moment was untimely for such action —a calmer popular feeling should be made and awaited. The motion was rejected by a vote of 399 to 83. The Chambers adjourned for a month.
