—It is announced the Federal Union ot submitted to its several Legislatures The scheme is similar to that under which Canada is confederated.

—Having endured the horrors of war, Egypt is now enduring the horrors of cholera. Hundreds are dying daily ; the air is full of the plague; and precautions are being taken to preveat it from spreading to Europe.

—Principal Grant thioks that a union of, not the Methodists only, but of several other distinctively Protestant bodies is likely to tuke place. So that the union be prompted by the right Spirit, let it come speedily.

—The French have seized the port and custom house ot Tamatav, Mada- gascar, they threaten Tonquin and the Celestia) Empire, and they occupy the New Hebrides. Rather aggressive conduct for a Republican nation, seeing thet republicanism is supposed to respect, somewhat, the rights of the people!

—There has lately been a test election in Mavitoba, Five months ago, Mr. Burnham, aan Opposition candidate, was elected by a majority of ten; and, on Saturday last, Mr. Chalmers, the Gov- eroment candidate, defeated Mr. Bura- ham by a majority of seventy-six. This proves that the Liberal Conservative party io Manitoba is rapidly gaining ground.

—The Government of New Bruns- wick, haviog taken Tue Examiner's ad- vice and reorganized the management ot the Dominion and Centennial Exhibition, the leading men of St. Jola are energeti- cally forwarding the work of prepara- tion. The control of the Exhibition has been vested in « Commission; and har- mony has been restored. The Govern- ment is to be congratulated on its prompt action. We hope soon to hear the that suggestions of our Advisory Board have been adopted.

—The Globe contends that by going to England to represent the Government of which he isa member, Sir Charles Tupper has violated the Independence of Parliament and forfeited his seat in the House of Commons. The Globe over- leoks the fact that the Commission which Sir Charles carries to England expressly sets forth that uoder it he shall receive no salary.

——The season when poor unfortunate townspeople, compelled to stick to business, like to take advantage of ap occasional opportunity to get away into the country fur a few hours, has arrived. To these people the steamers ‘* Heather Belle” avd ‘* Southport” are at once a cheap, easy, and pleasant means of con- veyauce. The new * Heather Belle”’ has stood a successful trial trip, and in

decided improvement on the old ** Heather Belle;” and the “ Sourhport” has uodergone repairs and improvements. The one goes to Belfast aud Crapaud ; the other plies on the East and West Rivers, The cool breezes of the expan- sive Bay or the quiet undulating scenery along the serpentine rivers! A kuowledge of the literature in these languages is unquestionably of great advantage. But the benefits derived from the merely superficial smattering knowledge of them, which is all that can be obtained in a four or five years course at College, are very questionable. If

|the pupil be the heir of lots of cash so

that he willl never have to earn his own living, it may perhaps, be advisable for him to begin life by the study of the dead languages. But for those who have to earn their bread in the world, the best plan to adopt is the reverse of this. Begin with English, learn French aud German if you can; and then go on till the dead languages be reached, if, indeed, it be possible to reach that supreme esd. However this may be, it is ridiculous to teach Latin and Greek in the Public Schools of Prince Edward island, while nothing whatever is taught respecting agriculture,

~—The votes of this week decide that Methodist Union shall take place. ‘Che denominations to be united are the Methodist Church of Canada, represeut- ing a population of 582,063 ; the Metho- dist Episcopal, representing 103.272; the Bible Christians, 27.236, and the Primitive Methodists, 25,680. Total 739.251. Of the six Conferences of the Methodist Chu:ch of Canada, the Minis- terial votes on the Basis of Union are,—

And the laity of the Methodist Church of Canada have adopted the Basis on a vote of 7,084 against 1,425. The ak parties to the “proposed contract also, so far as heard from, cast a majofity of votes in favor of the Unioa. Of eighty Cirenit Boards of the Methodist Episco- pal Church, sixty-nine have declared in favor of Union, The Bible Christian Church is for the Union by a vote of fifty-four to sixteen ; and the ‘Rey. W. S. Pascoe (well known in Charlottetown) nas gone to England to secure the assent oi the British Conference. The Primi tive Methodists are almost unanimous for the Union; and the Methodists of Newfoundland have accepted the Busis by a vote of twenty-six to three. It uow only remains for the General Conference which will assemble at Bellville, Ont., in September next, to consummate the Union.

A, few weeks ago, the two oldest officials of the City were placed on starvation allowances on the plea of economy ; aud this week the ser vices of one who has been a most pains- taking and enthusiastic member of the Board of School Trustees were dispensed with withont any adequate cause at all. True, Mr. Hodgson’s term had expired. But having proved himself to be all that could be desired in a Trustee, it was reasonable avd proper that, unless he positively declined to act, he should be reappointed, as others had been. Mr. Hodgson has at all events vindicated himself from the aspersiou that he is an enemy of our public schools. Indeed, it is worthy of remark that the Trustees, most atientive at the school examina tions aud most active in promoting the interests of the schools, are those who opposed the election of the Davies-Stewart Party. There could not be appointed more earnest members of the School Board than Messrs. A. .A McDonald, Thomas Handrahan, J. B. McDonald and E. J. Hodgson. Time proves all things ; and it has proved that those who were most solicitons for an improvement in the schools of Charlottetown were not the men who ranted against Popery in order that the Christian religion might not be taught or recognized in them. nn ae ————

Supreme Court.

In the case of the Bank of P. E. Island vs. John Ings, the jury having found a verdict for the defendant, Mr. F. Peters yesterday, moved for a rule nisi to set tt aside, which was granted.

The greater part of yesterday morning was occupied in hearing an argument upon an application of John McNaught for "a writ of certiorarie. Morson for the appli- cation ; Peters contra.

John Henry Gates vs. William D. Gallo- way. —This case was tried this term when a verdict was rendered for the plaintiff. Mr. Hodgson for the defendant, applied for and obtained a rule nisi to set this verdict aside on the ground that it was contrary to the evidence and the judge's charge.

The Queen vs. John Brown— Indictment for an attempt to rob,—-Prisoner was this morning sentenced to three years in the Penitentiary at Dorchester.

McDonald vs. Lane.—Tried at George- {town in February lest, when verdict was found for defendant. An argument” is uow being heard to set aside this verdict, and for a new trial. Palmer, Q. C,, and . ©. McLeod for plaintiff,
