LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

An Answer for “‘ George.”

Srtr,—‘* George” has appeared again in your issue of the 13th inst. ‘‘George”’ has gone to great trouble in searching for ‘all the hard suyings and bad actions of the old Reformer to refute my Scripture letter. How far he has done that, every reader of those letters will judge for themselves. I think, with all his sophistry and spite to 'the old Reformer, ‘*George” has not touched one of the Scripture passages that imy letter contains. Would ‘‘George” like to take his knife and erase all those passages fromthe New Testament. If he would J shall try to give hima few more, If Luther has defiled them Iam sure that it would suit ‘‘George” to have them not 'to stand in his way. Why did ‘George "” ‘bring Luther on the field? It plainly shows his weakness. If Luther trans- _gressed or violated the laws of the Gospel ‘laid down by the Apostles of our Lord, what has that to do with the _ point lin question? Could “George” bring ‘no Scripture to overturn my first lletter? If he could, why has _ he | not done so? The error of Luther or

any other person could have no effect upon ‘the poiat in question. Iam nota disciple ,of Luther. 1 did not receive my know- iledge from Luther or the Canon. I got it ' direct from the Word of God. The point in question is this ; are we to keep the commandments to gain heaven, or are we io receive the faith of the gospel that works by love and privileges the heart? I main- ‘tain that it is by Faith that works by Love land privileges the heart. Ishall give you 'the first part of Canon Scott-Hollan@’s: let- ter. The Light House at Souris, which is 42 feet high and 82 feet from sea level, is in a conspicious location. The light is a white optic one, and can be seen a distance of eleven miles. The spar-light recently erected on the outer end of the breakwater, which is 42 feet high, is of great value to

But what saith it ? The word is nigh thee,even in thy mouth and in thy heart, that is, the word of faith which we preach, ‘hat, if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus gnd shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Again, chap. iii., verse 27th. ‘‘Where is boasting then,is it excluded? By what law of works, ray, but by the law of faith.” Therefore, we con- clude that a man is justi-fied by faith without the deeds of the law. I shall give you two verses from the fifth chapter of Romans, and I wish you to take special notice of them as 1 think they are a complete refutation of the idea of keeping the law to enter Heaven; ‘‘ Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom also we have access by faith unto this grave wherein we stand and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

I could give you a great number of scrip- ture texes, but space will not allow me. I suppose that ‘‘George” will slay them ali with the ‘“‘sins of Luther” That is the sword ‘* George” takes to slay justification by faith, I would ask him if he knows who that sword belongs to? It is not the sword of the Spirit, but it is the sword of the wicked one (slander), ‘The reader of this letter will observe that ** George” has gone hundreds of years back to gather all the crimes that the old Reformer has com- mitted and flung them at me,to slay J ustiti- cation by Faith. All to no purpose! It cannot be slain with that kind of a sword. Ali you can say about the old Reformer will not hurt him in the least. He has got too far away from you. Let him alone and let the word of God speak for itself.

This is my third letter, and I expect it is my last with ‘* George.” [ would ask your careful consideration on tie passages of Scripture that I quoted, and see whether they will support my views. I have said that the Commandments were in force till our Lord rose from the dead, but not after. It is nothing but rank Judaism to preach the Commandments to any person to bring them to Heaven. Ide not for a moment deny that the Gospel has no laws to obey. ‘It has its own laws, Faith is the founda- tion that will bring love, and the two com- bined will purify the heart and cause the | person to be obedient to the Lord.

There are two schouls, besides the Con- vent school. The Grammar School, in the hall, with Mr. James Lannigan as principal and Miss Campbell as assistant, and the Colville Schoo!, with Mr. H. P. Duchemin as principal and Miss Leslie as assistant, are both creditable educational institutions, under the supervision of so efficient a stalf of teachers.

Notre Dame Convent is an excellent edu- cational institution, and is beautifully lo- cated on high ground, and commands a fine view of not only the surrounding country, but also parts of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island. It is a brick structure, 80x45 feet, and four stories high. The trimmings are white Bristol brick, and make a pleasing contrast with the rest of the building. The ladies in charge are Sister St. Hedwig (Superior), Sister St. Margaret, Sister St. Mary, and Sister St. Matiida. ‘The convent is well arranged for school purposes, and the class-rooms, dor- mitories, chapel, etc., are large, well- ventilated, and kept neat and servpulously clean. In the class-rooms there is ample blackboard surface, an important factor in a schoolroom. In addition to the ordinary branches taught, are Latin, French, draw- ing, music, algebra, mathematics, sewing, embroidery, eve. Pupils are prepared for second-class licenses. The music, both vocal and instrumental, by the pupils, was weil rendered, and showed that that soul- stirring accomplishment is carefully taught. I noticed some very fine works of art there, which would be a credit to any studio. The Rev. D. F. McDonaid, P. P., who has been in Souris for the last twenty-live years, deserves much credit for his indefatigable exertions in being instrumental in building so permanent an educational monument. The postoffice is not in keeping with the requirements of this place. The large and daiiy-increasing amount of business trans- acted now, demands better and jarger ac- commodations. The Souris branch of the Bank funder the management of Mr. Hughes, is centrally located, and is, I un- derstand, doing a good business.
