since then up to the present time. after the suspension they employed Mr. Jack to examine the Bank's affairs and pre pare a Balance Sheet as the Books stood on that day. As soon as they could form anf} adequate idea of the Bank's position 4 | Special Meeting of Stockholders was called | -o consider the matter, which was held on
the 12th January last. A Report and State- | ment was then submitted, according to} which the probable losses at that date were
estimated at $300,000, and also sugvestinug | that a Committee of Stockholders be ap- pointed to make an in lepende at valuation of the assets and report the resuit at a future meeting. According to this com- | mittee’s report the losses were estimated at | $389,500. Outside of that, however, the | committee reported that there was a large ac- | count in s»spense and difficult of valuation, which under adverse circumstances would | materially increase the above estimated loss. A further adjournment was made to the Ist February, in the hope that a definite
eettlement of this account might be effected negotiations being then in progress —and
the position of ‘he Bank more clearly de- | fined. Meanwhile, the Cashiers of the sev eral Banks in the City were consulted, and | on their report and that of the Committee | resolutions were passed at that meeting, by | the Stockhoiders and Depositors present, | agreeing upon certain terms upon which | the Bank might resume business. These | terms are embodied in an agreement since |
signed by the Directors, Stockholders | and Depositors, and agreed to by} he local and foreign Banks, and
by the Dominion and Previncial Govern- ments. This meeting adjourned to 15th | February. As the period for resumption was drawing nigh, and that account remained— notwithstanding all the efforts to obtain a | settlement—-in a very urcertain state, | your Directors, in conjunction with the Union and Merchants Banks, decided to send Mr. Louis H. Davies (accompanied by Mr. John Hughes) to London, armed
with full powers to deal with this account, according to his discretion, in the interests of the several Banks
eoncerned. On the 15th of February the | Stockholders met and passed a resvlution éflirming the principle that in case of re sumption the contributors should have a/| preferential dividend of five per cent. over nen-contributors, This meeting adjourned | to 23rd February, and again to the 4th | instant, at neither of which meetings any business of importance was transacted. The meeting was further adjourned tothe day of the annual meeting. As Mr. Davies, soon | after his arrival in England, ascertained that it was not possible for him to close his business before the expiring of the statuary period for resumption, applica- tion was made to the Dominion Government for an extension of the time, which was at once undertaken by the Government, a Bill prepared and finally became law on the 3rd instant. The time for resumption is now extended to ninety days from 25th Febru- ary. They are sorry to say that they are still in the same position, having no fur- ther information to give you. They may state that since the suspension they have |

Tae Dominion Rifle Association met at Ottawa on the Ist inst. The Governor General, Minieter of Militia, Major Gener- al Luard, and many of the jpreminent military officers eof the Dominion were present. After addresses by His Excel- lency and Col. Gourski, it was moved by Major Macpherson, seconded by Captain Perley, that the affiliation fee for Provin- cial associations be reduced to (2) That the affiliation for local associations be reduced to $12 ; (5) That members be classi- fed, first as members and second as asso- ciate members, the former to pay $2 per annum with present rights and privileges, and the latter to pay $1 per annum, with the privilege of taking part in the annual matches but not to take part in the manage- ment of the Association. Referring again to the London aceount, since the departure of Mr. Davies, a gentle man representing Thomas Arhby & Co., and Brown, Jansen & Co., has arrived here, holding on behalf of Thomas Ashby & Oo., a guarantee of J. R. Brecken, Cash- ier, for payment of accepted drafts of Thomas & Oxley on John £15,000 sterling, on which a liability of about £8,000 1s claimed to be due. This guarantee was, however, not authorized by or within the knowledge of the Board, and your Directors do net admit the Bank’s liability. In closing this, our Annual Ro- port, we cannot do more than express the hope that a favorable settlement of that account may be shortly effected, and that the balance of the Stockholders will see the absolute necessity of coming forward and raking their payments to enable the Bauk to resume business as speedily as possible.

Sin,—I wish, through the columns of your paper, to cajl the attention of the! Government to the present system of road breaking in this Province.
Having been storm-staid in the country some four days last month, at the residence of a very intelligent farmer, (who, by the way, is a thorough Conservative, and asub- scriber to Tae Examiner) 1 had an excel- | lent opportunity of acquainting myself with | the “ system” now in vogue. { I do not propose suggesting any pew system, but simply to bring to the notice of the Government the grievances which the present law causes,
It creates great unpleasantness between the farmersand their neighbors. It breeds discontentment. It does not tond to unite in harmony one family with another. The Overseer of a district (who does nut receive any compensation for his services) has a hard time of it. He cannot please all, and is thereby loaded with abuse. He is charged with being partial. If, for any reason, one man does not perform his Statute Labor, the Overseer is condemned. Both the Surveyorfand Overseer are always in hot water with their neighbors. Any law which does not tend to elevate the morality of a country, instead of being a blessing, is a curse. The country calls for a remedy; they are entitled to it; «nd we hope the Government will not allow the coming Ses-

A New York paper says: ‘‘ Practical Christianity is on the advance when a elergyman in this city discourses on the desirability of opeving libraries and mu- seums on Sunday. The devil works hard on Sunday; why should not all opposing influences take a hint from his example ?”
The Opposition press in the various pro- vinces are excited somewhat about the prospects of an early election. They have had so many disappointments that they will not be amazed if another should be in store for them on this point. We have only one piese of advice to give them, and that is to beware of following the lead of the Globe, and not to prophesy either the elections or the result.—till they know— Toronto Mail.
The number of births registered in Ontario during the year was 42,312, an in- crease of 1,277 over 1879. The number of marriages registered was 12,783, an increase of 274 over 1879. The number of deaths registered during the year was 19,802, an increase of 1,844 over 1879. The total number of births, marriages, and deaths registered in 1880 was 74,897, being an increase of 3,395, or 4.7 per cent. over the registrations in 1879. For every 100 females born there were 1085 males. The

| The London Morning Post, in an edi- torial on the Marquis of Lorne’s speech at the opening of the Dominion Parliament, says there is abundant testimony of the quality of the cereals of Manitoba and the valley of the Saskatchewan. As regards emigration, it cannot be doubted that the _ right sort of man will make his way. The agriculturist will there be under the pro- tection ef the British flag and his sons may become legislators for a mighty British American empire established between the old Maritime Proviiaces ond Vancouver, the chief factor being the Canadian Pacific Railway.
