How the Good Work Goes On.

Srr,--While the Royal Commission, for months past, has been considering the vexed question of prehibition, and deliber- ating on the ways and means best calcul- ated to regulate the liquor traffic, the good work at Montague has been going silently on. After weary years the traffic has at length been got under control, and thirsty souls must seek elsewhere for their dram. A conscientious performance of duty on the part of the License Inspector, the untiring zeal of the resident clergymen, the persistent efforts of the temperance workers, backed by a healthy and vigorous public sentiment, have at length resulted in the complete annihilation of the rum traffie at Montague. The nine or ten places formerly epgaged in retailing the ardent have been compelled to shut down owing to Jack of business. The great moral influence exerted by the churches through their numerous members and adherents has begun to bear fruit, and has eon- tributed in no small measure to this grand re- sult. The occupation of the temperance agitator and the W.C. T. U. is gone, and every one is happy. Success to the cause; let the good work go on, Scorr Act,

Our Winter Roads. Sir, — Now that the discussion concerning tthe making of the public roads during summer is done, I would like to draw the attention of the public to the state of our roads during winter. Ido not think that there is any person, who travels on our winter roads but will agree with me that the method of keeping them open is very un- satisfactory. The roads are for the most part put through fields and from them branch off bye-roads in all directions. A person travelling in any part of the country with which he is not well aequainted, is often at a loss how to find his way except by constant enquiries, and after night it is well-nigh impossible to travel on such roads. Again, after a thaw the field rosds are un- fit for hauling on for the rest of the winter and the overseers invariably neglect to open the highways till late in the spring, so that the travelling public is greatly incon- venienced. 4 Now, as our Legislature is to meet about the first of next month, and as it is the opinion of the travelling public in general that our present system of winter road-making is even worse than that of summer, I would make the following suggestions to our law makers; Ist, That in winter season overseers be compelled to keep the public prery broken. 2nd. That they be compelled to keep a double track on them in order to allow sleighs to pass easily on all parts of the road. If this system were pursued it would com- pletely overcome the difficulties and incon- veniences experienced in winter travelling. The system has been in operation in the Province of Quebec for some years past where it has given entire satisfaction. Emerald Notes

The quiet little village of Emerald was on Monday, 13th inst., greeted by the arrival of a bridal party from Churlottetewn. The bridegroom was Mr. James McCarron

engineer on the steamer Elfin, and the bride was Miss Aylward of Southport. They were entertained at the Dominion House during the day by Mr. John Hughes, the genial proprietor. Dr. M. Wall and Geo. R. McMahon, Esq., station agent, were also guests. In the evening the party proceeded by rail to Cape Trav- erse, where they remained till next even- ing, when they returned to the city. On the evening of the same day, the mem- bers of the Kinkora Branch of the League of the Cross gave an excellent entertainment in the Emerald Hall. The vocal music was fur- nished by the choir of Kinkora, led by Mr. D. J, Cameron, while Mise Claude Craig presided at the organ. Many plays were successfully carried out,and Mr. J. J. Johnston, Attorney- at-Law, of Charlottetown, gave a well render- ed address on the workings of the League of the Cross. He is a very forcble speaker, commands the attention of his hearers to per- fection with the greatest ease, and gives every promise of having a very successful career at the bar.

Mercantile transactions here are conducted by Mr. Albert Craig and Mr. P. F. Hughes, whe have large and well-stocked stores of dry goods and groceries, always sell at the lowest prices and are kind and obliging to customers

Our school is progressing favorably under the guidance ef the worthy principal, Mr. Johnston, and his able assistant, Miss Mac donald. Mr. Johnston is preparing several students for the entrance examination to the Prince of Waies College, to be held on the Ist of July next,

A Goop Derinition oF Gritism.—J. A. Chesley, the new member for St. John, N. B., tells a good story about the late member for that city, Judge Skinner. It will be remem- bered that Mr. Skinner left the conservative party some years ago and was elected aa an independant liberal, and for several sessions voted with the opposition. Two sessions ago he became disgusted with the grit policy, or want of policy, and supported his old con- servative friends. When he returned to St. John after the session of 1891 some of his liberal friends asked him, why he had left the party. ‘“‘Well,” he said, ‘“‘it is this way: I could get along well enough with you fellows down here, but I could not get along at all with the Oatario grits. They are just like w lot of geese in a pasture. They eat up everything in front of them; they scratch up everything behind them and nothing comes again where they once have been.” —Montreal Gazette.

Pablic Meeting at Victoria.

According to notice, a large representa- tive meeting was held at Victoria on Thursday evening last ‘to further consider the advisability of petitioning the Govern- ment to subsidize a steamer of suitable dimensions to run from Victoria Harbor to Pugwash, N.S. Johu 8. McQuarrie was called to the chair, and the undersigned was chosen Secretary. Agreeable to pro- mise at the former meeting, a report of the yearly exports and imports of Crapaud was aceon Ass ge and a statement showing the amount of freight that in all probability would go by this route if a steamer could be procured.

This was followed by a resolution declar- ing that “‘it is expedient to petition the Government to subsidiza and procure a steamer to ply on this route.’’

After some two or three persons had spoken to the resolution, our local repre- sentatives, Hon. William Campbell and Mr. Warburton, who kindly favored us with their presence, came forward and ably ad- vocated the resolution, setting forth very forcibly the desirability and great beaefit that would accrue from putting a suitable boat on this route, and that trade would pe and develop until all would be bene- tted thereby.

It was then moved and secoaded and un- animously carried, that the resolution be adopted; and # committee was immediately appointed to draft aud submit a petition to that effect.

The business part of the meeting being disposed of, Mr. Campbell thought it would not be out of place to have a little talk on politics; and rising, he gave an excellent speech touching on various phases of the outlook and pleasently heaving an occasiona shell into the Government camp. followed by Mr. Warburton speech ably defending his party.

A hearty vote of thanks was tendered to these two gentlemen for their kindness in attending, and the good service thus rendered was suitably acknowledged.

St. Joseph's Literary Society.

A large, orderly and interested audience enjoyed a musical and literary treat in the Hail at Kelly’s Orvss, Lot 29, on February ist, when Mr. J. H. Reddin, of Charlotte- town, delivered his edifying and entertain- ing lecture on ‘St. Ignatius Loyola,” the founder of the Jesuit Order. The lecture contained a great deal of food for thought, was well written and as well read. It would but detract from its merits to at- tempt to recall any of its glowing passages again on paper; suffice it to say that the clever lecturer's audience, by their atten- tion, showed that they fully appreciated its worth. This is the second of the course of lectures procured for the enjoyment and in tellectusl benefit of the members of the St. Joseph's re Society by Father McE}meel, Spiritual Director of the society and our esteemed pastor.

Trainor, was so well rendered and received that she was obliged to respond to a persistent encore. The reading by Mr. John Smith, vice- president of the society, was just the thing to raise a laugh, and was so read as to “bring down the house” with rapturous ap- plause. Miss Sarah A. McQuaid sang in fine voice ‘‘The Musician and His Harp,” and also, with violin accompaniment by her brother, Master Dominick, ‘People will Talk,” in response to an encore. The choruses of the school children were lead- ing features of the programme.

A vote of thanks to Mr. Reddin was moved by Mr. John Smith, seconded by Mr. Devereaux, and supported by Mr. J J, Bradley, Rev Father McEimeel and Rev J A McDonald, who favored the audience withfhis presence. “Father James” spoke in eulogistic terms of the status of the Bt. Joseph's Literary Society, and promised to attend future ensertainments at Kelly's Cross.

The audience departed, well satisfied, with the singing of God Save the Queen,
