HARTFORD, May 58.—A high wind trem the west was blowing, and the Character Oak course was heavy from the effects of a thunder storm, when Mr. Biair drove “Maud S.” from the quarters this atternoon. The fact that the mare was to be given a trial to-day was well known. and four or five hundred people, prominent in sporting circles were present. Charley Del- monico, Dan Mace and William H. Vanderbilt's friend, William Turnbull, were among the crewd in judges’ stand.

Just as Blair brought her to a Standetill under the wire, Mr. Turn- bull touched Charley Delmonico on tho shoulder and said, ‘,I'il bet you a dinner for ten that she makes a mile in 2.15.” Charley looked at the heavy track, which had already somo what marred the cleanliness of the sulky wheels, observed that the breeze was growing fresher and stronger every minute, and said “I'll. take you.” On the quarter stretch and grand stand tablets and money were produced, and many wagers were made on the pro- bable resalt. Even bets were made that the mare would do the mile in 2.17 and a few wagers were laid at $50 to $100 that she would make it in 2.15.

Dan Mace and Mr. Delmonico stood over the wire watches in hand. Blair turned the mare’a head, drove her up the track about a hundred yards, turned her head again, and started down the wire at arapid gait. He threw up his whip for the word, and when Mace said “Gol” the queen shot out like a flash of light, amid the wild cheers of the spectators. She passed the first quar'er pels at 2.20 vait. Her speed gradually increased until, when near the last turn she was goiog at what it was estimated was a2.10 gait, She losta little on the turn but beaded tor the homestretch atarattling pace. Blair leaned over

Blair jamped from the sulky, the grooms threw a blanket over the queen, and she was led off to her stables.

“Tfany one wants to bet that Maui S. cannot trot a mile under 2.10 be will not have trouble in finding takers,” said Mr. Tarnbull. Blair was warmiy congratulated on the time, which is the best ever made in the month of May. Mr. Robert Bonner’s Picard has a record of 2.16} in the same month. He said the mare could have made the mile in several seconds less if it had not been for the heavy track. ‘“ Practically speaking,” said he, “she went at her own gait. I urged her but very little, aud only used the whip on the home- stretch, and then touched her very lightly. Ide not think that there is any doubt that she can beat 2.01.

After Maud 8’s feat, Early Rose was hitched up aod went the mile in 2.22. Thea Maud S. and Aldine were hitched together, aud made the mile in 2.24}.
