His intentions have not vet been ascertained, but it is rumored that he visited this side of the boundary.”

Axour three weeks ago a French girl, from Lancaster village, Ontario; came) home sick from Montreal and died im two days. It was afterwards learned that nearly all of the fam- ilies that attended the wake are down with the small-pox, so the dgctors conclude it was mal- ignant small-pox that she died of. It is now in 8families, with 23 cases and 6 deaths. It is confined to the poor outlying section of the village, and most active and stringent means have been taken to confine it to its present limits.

ee THe semi-annual examination of the Port

Hill School took place on the 24th ult. There were present a goodly number of the pupils parents and other friends interested in the promotion of education. A fair sprinklin the ladies was also pleasurably noticeable. Under the active and able management of the teacher, Mr. Wm. Montgomery, this school bids fair to. class amongst the first in the Province. The good discipline displayed, and the satisfactory manner in which the children acquitted themselves during an examination, Jengthy and searching, was a source of great tification to all present. Amongst the prizes for the ensuing half year, we noticed one in particular which Rev. Mr. Dobin has nerously offered for the best essay on a sub- ject to be hereafter named.—Com. to Journal.

We hope they may succeed in haying their request granted ; but we are afraid they will be denied that advantage, on account of being too near this station.
