A Crrrosrry. —-A petrified salmon has been found in California on a hillside 1,500 feet high. The fleshy part resembles crystallised and variegated quartz, retaining in part the yellowish color of the salmon, and what was the skin of the fish is now a sort of porcelain, er white flint. It is supposed to be a relic of some ancient river.

Deatu’s Harvest.—Mr. James L, Stanley, of the Moncton Times, formerly of Charlotte- town, has lost another of his children, making three deaths in his family within a few weeks. Little Frank, whose sudden death we record to-day, aceompanied his father on his vacation trip to the Island a few months ago, and was a wore than Qusually bright little boy. We sympathize with Mr. Stanley in his affliction.

Extradition Extension.

Among the memorials presented to the Senate to.day was one from the American Surety Company, of New York, praying for the extension of the extradition law to cases of embezzlement, ete. Accompanied was & memorial giving a partial list of embezzlers who have fled to Canada. The offences of all were committed since 1885,

A Dangerous Obstruction.

New York, Dec. 20.

_ The breaking adrift of the great raft of timber, from Nova Scotia, has caused consternation among marisers. The raft is how a dangerous obstruction in the track ot vessels approaching New York or Phila- delphia. The Superintendent of the Mari- time Exchange has asked the Secretary of the Navy to order a naval vessel to cruise in the vicinity of latitude 40.16 north, longitude, 70.08, where the raft broke away, to warn vessels approaching from the east.

Salvationists on Trial.

Querec, Dec. 20.

In the case against the Salvation Army, the police judge yesterday decided there was suflicient evidence to put the accnsed Salvatlonists upon their trial for the offence of creating a public nuisance by their parades. ‘They were accordingly arraignea and pleaded ‘* Not Guilty.” Their counsel requested delay, and the cas2 was accord- ingly adjourned until the 28th inst.

Disaster at Sea.

New York, Dec. 20,

The steamer Portia arrived to-day from Souris, P. E. I. She had in tow the brig Endric, Capt. Mahony, which left St. John seven days ago with building raterials. When three days out a hurricane threw the brig on her beam ends, and carried away her foremast, mainmast, bulwarks and deck load of laths, leaving her disabled and helpless.

The Great Raft Abandoned.

New York, Dec. 20. The great raft launched on the 15th ult. at the Finger Board, ner Two Rivers, Nova Scotia, and which the steamer Miran- da was towing tothis port, was abandoned at sea off Bluck Island on Sunday, during a fearful snow storm.

THz annual public meeting of the above

Society was held in St. Dun- stan’s Cathedral at which the re- port of the good work done by

the Conference during the past year was submitted. The receipts in cash were $247.61,and disbursements $205.02, leaving a balance of $42.59 in the hands of the Treasurer.

The Society was not called upon to purchase much fuel, Mr. Owen Connolly, as usual, having donated upwards of one hundred tons of coal, and a quantity of blankets to be distributed to the poor of all denominations.

No greater boon, no more beneficial relief than fuel can be bestowed during the cold winter months, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, on behalf of the suffering poor of Charlottetown, have reason to be grateful to Mr. Connolly for his generous assistance.

The poor will be pleased to learn that Mr. Connolly has donated a further supply of coal and blankets fer the coming winter.

This Society has done a great amount of good during the past eight years in alleviat- ing the wants of the poor, and deserves the confidence and assistance wf our citizens. At this season of the year, when so many of our poor are in need it would be well to remember the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and contribute more or less of our means to enable its members.to go on with the good work of St. Vincent .de Paul.
