Mr. Coles will represent the Secretary at Tignish. Poor Mr. Gall! We hope that before journeying hence, he will Jeave with the men of the West a lock of his hair.

The Colonial Secretary and his friends will arrive in Town on Friday next, at about 12 o'clock.

(F We are compelled to defer the publication of the remainder of the De- bate on the late Colonial Secretary’s fees, in order to make room for the great amount of advertising matter we have been this week required to insert.

Nor shall we forget the claims of our fair readers, when our columns are re- lieved from electioneering mattere, and from advertizements. We have some interesting Tales and literary Sketches, in readiness for their amusement.

Important TO Farmers.—We have been informed by some of the merchants of Pictou, that the article of butter,which forms a large export from this place to St. John’s Newfoundland, has for some time past been very much depreciated, from being too much salted. Whether itis a mistake in judgment on the part of manufacturers, or a desire to sell salt which they buy at 2s. 6d. per bushel, at 7d. or 8d. per ib. along with” the butter, we cannot teli; but it is now an undoubt- ed fact, that the Pictou butter from this cause is almost worthiess in that mar- ket. :

Advices have been received, stating that ifan improvement is not instantly made, the Canadian butter will drive ours out of the market. We give this hint for the beriefit of our friends inthe coun- try, and hope they wil! take notice there- of and govern themselves accordingly.— | Halfax Chronicle.

A Boy Snor.—We regret to say that on Friday forenoon, about 11 o'clock, Louis Rouaselle, a lad of 14, living on the Cote Visitation, lost his life in the following manner:—Accomparied by a younger boy, he went out shooting, when, in get- riog over a fence, his gun, the muzzle ‘yeing pointed towards his breast, went off, lodging the entire charge—a_ marble and some peas—in his body. The poor boy died almost instantaneously, having raerely time to exclaim, * Oh, mon Dieu.” {Montreal Herald.

Bor carriep over Niagara Farts. -A boy two years old, named James atcGrath, was carried over the Falls on the ]9th instant. Hewas plaving on a board at Street’s Factory, onthe Canada *ide, in company with anelder brother ; thou father saw them, and chided the eider one, who suddenly jumped off,when toe other was. precipitated into the s ream. He soon cot into the rapids, and the father hurried to rescue him; but in yain—the bey went over the Falls!

“We have recently seen some capital likenesses daguerreotyped in oil. They have a life-like appearance which it js impossible to impart to the ordinary daguerreotvpe. The discovery isa new one, by a gentleman in this city, who is about to introduce this new style of por- traitto the public, when it will probably do away with the old method altogether.”

It is said, in the Buffulo Advertiser, that some purtiesin Naples contemplate the construction of a canal, from the sea into the heart of Mount Vesuvius,through which they intend to let in the waters of the Mediterranean, with the view of ex- tinguishing the fires of the volcano! The value of the lands to be reclaimed by the project would, itis calculated, more thau repay the outlay for the canal:

Texas papers say that the Indians of that country make a practice of stealing white children; and that lately two white chil- dren, who are now in possession at Fort Smith, were rescued from them. ‘The children, one about five, the other about seven years, appear to have lost al recol- lection of the whites, and left the Indians with regret. It is not known to whom they belong, and probably never will be, as they are unable to make any statement themselves that may lead to the discovery of their parents. |

MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT, AND Loss OF Two Lives.—Un Sunday morning, the Istinstant, the House of James Kinlay, Esq., J. P., West Cape of this Island, was discovered to be on Fire. Mr. Kinlay, with great difficulty, succeeded in saving a very small portion of his poperty,nearly everything being consumed,and most mel- ancholy to relate,his Son Julez, a fine boy of 12 years of age, together with a bro- ther of Mr. Kinlay’s, who was both deaf and dumb, perished in the flames. The heart of the unhappy youth was found nearly entire, but not another vestige of either was discovered. The fire. origi- nated in the carelessness of a servant maid going to sleep. leaving a candle burning by her bedside.

On the 7th inst. from the Shipyard of Mr. Michael Campion, East Point, a very superior built Schooner, called the * Res- PONSIBLeE”,—measurement, 150 tons old, and 70 new. She is expressly built to prosecate the Mackerel and Cod Fishery.

On the 20th ult., at Orwell Head, Donald Nicholson, Esq., (Stanchel,) aged 77 years. He emigrated to this Island from the Isle of skye about 50 years gince.
