In 1832 our public buildings were: Old St. Paul's, since pulled down; old St. James’, now used as a hall; old St. Dunstan’s, since used as the Pownal district school, and now out of use altegether; the old, old, or first Weslyian Chapel, 40x26; the old Court House, and the present Jail—four churches and two other bild- ings. Since then St. Paul’s, the old .Ves- leyan Chapel, three times enlarged and since pulled down, the old Baptist Church, the St. Dunstan’s Chureh, Zion Church, Prince Street Presbyterian Church; brick Wesleran Chureb, brick Baptist Church, the Christian’s Church on Prince towm Road, the Bible Christian Church, Second Wesleyan Church, and St. James’ Church—that is, thirteen churches built in fifty years, which I think is a very hand- some showing for a small city—nine of which are still in use. But this is not all. Two other Suildings--St. Patrick’s Hail and Y. M. ©. A. Hall—are devoted to nwral, scientific and religious purposes; and not one Unitarian or Universalist church or building among them; and the same old jail, once enlarged, that we had fifty years ago. The Bible.

Sin,—Without dwelling too long on the value and authority of the Holy Scriptures, I will call attention to one pvint further, which is of highly practical importance to those who would hold the Word of God in reasonable and proper estimation. In order to influence the conscience we must con- sider the exactness as well as brevity with which all he utterances of the Bible are made. A few examples will illustrate my meaving, ‘*He that believeth on Him is not condemned ; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only-begotten Son of God.”—John 3:18. Again, **He that believeth on the Sen hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” Again (John 6 :53)— ‘« Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily

say unto you, except ye _ eat the flesh of the Son of an, and drink His blood, ye have no life in you.” Again Mark 16, 15--16, ‘And He said unto them, go ye in‘o all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptiz- ed shall be saved; but He that believeth not shall be damned.” This in a different form: Mark 28, 18—20, “‘And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying: ‘All power is given unto me in Heaven and in earth. Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoaver I have commanded you.” We see that those who preach and teach in_ the name and by the authority of the Lord Jesus, are confined to very definite and

to the unfavorable state of the weather, to do much on their farms. Trade is very dull, although considerable shipping is going on. Already fovr schooners have cleared trom this harbor, laden with oats and other produce; one of which bas re- turned laden with coal. The harbor is blecked with ice, which causes the general depression.

King alcohol has ceased to be here. He has been dethroned. We hope never again to have him reign in our midst as of yore, leaving his mark upon ovr citizens—the mark of the Beast. The mcmbers of the Division of the Sons of Temperance in this village have the thanks and well wishes of this community for their noble and success- ful work of suppressing that nefarious traffic, which has been the bane of this place from time unmemorial.

Mr. James Johnston is making every pre- paration for the lobster fishing this season and will be at work as soon as the ice moves away.

We expected to have seen in your last issue a letter from our friend ‘‘Justice,” in answer to the weod-cock of Melville Hills, who styles himself ‘*Auld Brig.” The pub- lic are anxious to hear from ‘‘Justice” again, and we trust that he is this while but sharpening his lance for another on- slanght. .

The Rev. T. W. Johnson has opened in this village a Reading Room well supplied with reading matter of various kinds, and we learn that it is his intention to make access to this room free, during summer months, to all who may desire to improve or amuse themselves by reading during their leisure hours. We know that the people of this village will appreciate the Rev. gen- tleman’s kindness in thus affording them this opportunity of passing their spare moments pleasantly. Mr. Johnson has resided in our midst for quite a number of years and has always taken a moet active part in whatever tended to the welfare and progress of this locality.

Whi'e other teachers are enjoying their holidays, our teacher, Mr. A. Campbell, who seems never to weary in well-doing, still continues to teach for the convenience of one of hisclasses. He appears determin- ed to raise this school to a much higher standing than it has hitherto taken. The people of this vicinity have just reason to full proud of their clergyman, Rev. Mr. Johnson, and their teachers, Mr. A. Camp- bell, and Miss Webster. No more indefa- tigable workers in their several locations, are to be met with on this Island. —

The Spanish payers are full of the pro- posal io cut a canal from the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranoan Sea. The plan pro- posed is to deepen the River Gironde for some distance and reach the open sea at Narbonne, in the Department of Ande, The proposed work will be about 250 miles long, and will save @ distance of nearly 2.000 miles between Suez and London. Speaking of the great engineering proposals, one paper says that the Channel tunnel will turn an island into a peninsula, while the new canal will turn a peninsula into an island.

It is announced that Commander Chey- ne’s scheme for reaching the North Pole by
