Hie cashed the ace of spadel. overtook the queen of hearts with the ace, and discarded a club on the jack of hearts. He then. hand- ed West his trump trick, and It was curtains for West.

A heart return would give South 3 ruff - discard, thus avoiding a club loser. v A diamond return would be equally fatal, since It would give declarer an extra dia- mondtiricIk.AnIdalIowc]IuIbre~ turn by West would permit South to duck in dummy and score an extra club brick.

Without the doulble, declarer might well have chosen to rely on both the spade and diamond fin-asses.

In erﬁﬁect, West tried to gain an extra 100 points by doubling. Instead he lost not only the 100 points he might have scored by passing, but also the 1,660 points North-South tallied. '
