South found himself in three notrump through no particular fault of his own. North’s diamond bid was certainly proper, and so was the follow-up hirmmatory double of one spade to show his big hand. ,

South had to choose between responding one notrump or two diamonds, and. voted in favor of the notrump bid. In view of his previous two bids, North should have been content to say only two notrump, which would have rep-

cashed. East followed to one but had to' discard a spade on the other in order topmtect the king of hearts. '

By this time South had taken seven tricks and the defense none. It was apparent from East’s dis- card of a spade that he had re- linquished a spade winner to guard his heart king. East'slast six cards, therefore, had to consist of tourspades and K-x at hearts. So declarer led the ten of spades from dummy and permitted East to cash spade tricks. ;

But East then had to lead a heart and South, who was by now down to Q—x of hearts, was, able to make the last two tricks and the contract. ‘
