Tue Srrixe.—The strike on the Lachine Canal, Montreal, still continues. On the 18th about three thousand strikers marched abreast through the streets and attacked the offize of Davies & Son with revolvers and stones. Shots were returned from the of- fice, killing one and wounding three of the strikers.

Tae Larrmst oF THE Missinc Timorny McCarruy.—On Thursday of last week a French lad, aged about twelve years, a son of a Mrs. Babineau, who lives at the mill end of the bridge over the Scadouc river, saw—or alleges he saw—the body of a dead man floating at the edge of the ice. He says the man was in his shirt sleeves, had a rope around his neck and his throat cut. He also describes the position of the hands and arms. He says the man was in his shirt sleeves and had grey pants or drawers on. He told his mother of the fact at the time and she told him to say nothing about it. Mr. McCarthy’s friends have been in- formed of the fact and will take steps to have an examination made of the locality. — Moncton Times.

THe vacancies in the Government of Nova Scotia have been filled up. The Treasurership, vacant since the death of Hon. Stayley Brown, M. L. C., has been filled by the appointment of Hon. Rebert Boak, and another vacant seat in the Gov- ernment has been given to Dr. Farrell, M. P. P. for Halifax, who receives no office. The Hon. Robert Robertson, of Shelburne, has resigned the office of Commissioner of Mines, and will be succeeded by Mr. Albert Gayton, of Yarmouth. The only case,then, in which the people will be appealed to will be in regard to Mr. Gayton’s seat. This gentleman represents Yarmouth, which has been, apparently, unconditionally surren- dered to the Grits, both in its Local and Federal representation ; so that it is not probable Mr. Gayton’s re-election will be opposed. It is difficult to see at this ro- ment how the Government has been strenthened by the change.— Moncton Times

Moncton Morats.—The laws for the ar- rest of vagrants and vile women appear to be in abeyance, at least in Moncton. In other towns, when such people are found aivertising themselves and their illegal calling by public exhibition, they are fre- quently hauled up by the police and their career interrupted by a term of imprison- ment; but we do things differently here. Our livery stables hire them their moat showy teams and the frail ones occupy at once the streets and public attention with a view of furthering the interests of their shameful business. They have been drunk and disorderly in our town and have ereated scandalous ‘‘ scenes’”’ and have gone unwhipt of justice, when probably some un- offending fellow who has appeared on the street slightly intoxicated has been arrested, imprisoned, exposed and fined. There ap- pears to bein police circles a certain law for Cook’s Brook and other laws for the rest of the world. The way in which virtue and honest industry are encouraged among us is something new under the sun.—Tiines.
