GoopMAN on the 19th inst., frightened his sister, Mrs. Burns, out of her house—at the East End—by threatening to strike her. When she was outside he took several large pieces of pork and left the pre- mises. He was arres on a warrant for so doing, and appeared at the Stipendiary Magis- trate’s Court this forenoon to stand trial for the offence. The sister appeared against him, bat could not substantiate the charge. James was, however, sentenced to three months’ im- prisonment, with hard labor, with the alter-

published: ‘‘ Robert Watson Boyd, of Gateshead, will row any man in the world a match over the Tyne championship course, in from three to six months from the first deposit, for from £100 to £1000 a side ; or Boyd will row any man in the world two matches—one over the Thames champion- ship course, and the other over the Tyne championship course—for £200 a side each match, in from three to six months from the first deposit. Mr. Barrass has no desire to interfere with the engagement of Elliot and Higgins, but these offers are open to either of them, or to any one else. An answer through ‘‘Bell’s Life” will meet with attention.”

A Lying Report.

Dear Str,—During the past few days a re- port has been circulated to the effect that I on the 25th inst., committed a brutal assault on E. Blackburn, proprietor of the Prince of Wales Boarding House, also attempted to kill one of his childrén by the aid of Kerosene oil, and that a warrant was issued against me and I lodged in jail for such offence. |
Now, sir, this is one of the most malicious, lying repoats that ever got circulation through- out this celestial city. ‘The following are the t.ue facts;and though I feel humiliated in hav- ing to pen them, I dare contradiction :—
in company with three other young men, J was at Blackburn’s on the evening of the 25th, about half past six o’clock. Nothing occured, to disturb the harmony of the oceasion for | about an hour, until Blackburn asked me why | [ called him a thief in Court. To explain : some time ago, | was engaged as counsel, by a young man named MacMahon, to recover from Blackburn, in the City Court, the sum of six dollars and fifty cents, as compensation fora par of pants lost by him whilst a boarder at Blackburn’s. In answer to the above queston, ‘‘ Why I called him a thief in Court?’ I replied I did not say such a thing, and explained how I only asked a witness ot his (one Luby) what he meant when he said to MacMahon, ‘‘ Your pants has disappeared in the same manner as did the Frenchman’s rug.” The meaning of this was explained before His Honor the Stipendiary Magistrate, and needs no further comment. Blackburn’s reply was none too complimentary to my veracity, and he further added: ‘I owe you an old score. which I intend to settle soon.”
Shortly after Blackburn arose, and without the slightest provocation on my part, came be- hind my chair, and ere | could detine his in- tention, struck me a violent, cowardly blow on the side of the head. I asked why he did so, and he replied, ‘*That is one on the old score.” I then calmly asked the mistress of the house, who was present at the time, if she thought it was the right sort of a Christmas box; and she (who, by the way, is a man every inch of her) promptly responded by dealing two severe blews into my face, accompanied by the usual number of seratches, ete. Finding myself hurt, I determined to have satisfaction from Blackburn; and he, as he _ himself ex-
presses it, ‘‘Not having kept a_bar- room in Haltfax without learning the noble art.” was nothing loath to accommodate me. It is unnecessary to
describe that ‘‘set-to ;” suffice it to say, Black- burn suddenly awoke to the knowledge that he had caught a ‘‘tartar,” and also that a great number of stars—accompanied by a moon, had invaded his parlor. Finding himself ‘‘no- where,” as he expressed it, he caught upa chair, and, in his iruitless endeavors to strike me, succeeded in breaking the lamp that hung over his head; oil was profusely sprinkled over those present, and one of his children partook thereof too freely.

On arriving | found a. ebild suffering from having swallowed kerosene oil;: that the child’s head was wet with said oil,: but not in the slightest danger of dying.” That hearing Blackburn complaining of having been cut with a knife on the eye, I immediately ex- amined it, and found the wound. was caused by some dull instrument, such as a blow from a fist, or a fall on the edge of a table, ete., and I hereby emphatically deny that it’ was caused by a knife or any such like instrument. 1 would not, sir, have troubled you with this letter, were it not for the fact that the using of a knife (an instrument I never had nor carried), as well as my striving to kill a child by — kerosene oil down ‘its throat, also my being confined in jail on such an infamous charge, have been grasped at and eagerly swallowed by the gossips of this celestial city, and, as a matter of course, added to. My few friends entertain the thought not for one mo- ment; and I here solemnly aver such a report is totally and egregiously false. ‘The abeve is) a plain‘and unvarnished statement of the facts, and numbers are ready to testify to the same. I dare anyone to contradict the above ; and, I trust, this will satisfy my friends, as well as disappoint the gossips, whose busy tongues have so added to the foul, base, mis- erable lie. ‘Thanking you, Mr. Editor, for a space in your valuable Daily, allow me to subscribe myself, yours, truly,
