in other parts of the Island yesterday, St. Patrick’s Day, was celebrated by the National Societies of each place. A

Woven Web” was produced and the com pany of amateurs who had charge of 't distingu'ehed themselves. At Emerald a splendid entercainment was given under the direction of the B. I. Society, and with the assistance of : t}Dun tan’s College Glee Club an evening ot real pleasure was the result. A special train went up from Charlottetown to Emerald at 4 p. m. and returned after the performance.

The nameof Tommy Atkius, which ie a sonbriquet of the Bri tish private eoldier in all parts of the ‘world, had an official origin, and was originally used in the in- structions to non-commisioned officers for purposes of illustration, as John Thomas is often used on election forms,

Hence when a recruit arrived at a gar- rison the soldiers nenvally addressed him as Thomas Atkins until chey found out his real nane. Druaken soldiera reported themselves as Thomas Atkins when they were taken to a police station, until the public took it uj, and Tommy Atkins he- came an affectionate synonym for the gal- lant warriors of Her Mej-sty’s land forces.
