Brrrise Rar_roaps.—Britieh railroads had a profitable business in 1898. The actual resulte of the eighteen British com- panies, whose figures are takem ar repre- sentative of geueral railroad conditions throughout the mother country fer tbe balf year ending December 31, 1898, show grosa earnings of over £406,000,000, an in crease of £1,490,000, over the gross earao- inge of the correeponding half of 1897. The net revenues availab.e for the payment o' fixed charges and dividends ameunted to slightly over £17,000,000, an increase of £124,6u0, Eight companies bave beeu able tc increase their indivudale, six report an unchanged rate and in only four cases were slight increases inthe distribution of profite to stockholders considered ne-~ cessary.

Ameeting of the [shareholders was called on Thursday, March 9:h, to take into consideration tbe fitting up of a cold storage room, aud building of a house for the manager,

Hon. William Welsh took the floor, and in a forcible speech showed the advantages of cold storage. He eaid that steamers would call here every month. They, would have cold storage and if we had the

same, everything would be right, He ex- pressed his satisfaction with the manner in which the business had been couducted, highly,

enlogieed the manager and directers on th flourishing condition of the factory, and hoped that they would keepup their re- putation and bvild a suitable house for the manager.

Mr. R. Jenkins was opposed to cold- storage. He saidthat wecould shipour butter and cheese every month and did’at need it. He epoke very highly of the manager (Mr. Burgess) and hoped he would stay with us, antil he was too old to make butter and cheese.

The President, A. E. Dewar, said cold storage would cost something, but could we afford to do withoatit? He thought He said it was necessary to every well equipped factory. Mr. E. Wood, C. Myers. Robert Jenkins and others spoke iu favor of coli-estorage. When it was meved by W. Welsh, Exq., seconded by A. McRae, Eeq., that the compasy builda hous’, and put in coldstorage. Carried uosnimously.
