Ps the reality of Symposium A

'79 draws near, we the Students for Symposium '79, feel thata moment should be taken to reflect upon the many events leading up to the actual Symposium.

From the struggles en- countered in the first organizatimal meetings in September to the hectic preparations of press ccnferences and ptblicity campaigns to the laborious and careful planning of the Symposium itself, there have been a great many lessms learned. Not the least of these has been the cotprehension of the importance of team work and dedication to an idea.

Also unveiled during our preparatims were the subtle workings of the politics involved with such an endeavour. ,

I From the outset of ’the idea of a symposium at

UPEI there has been a great deal of positive response from all quarters of. the. cormunity but there has \ also beam a degree of‘ hesitation from certain quarters. Any friction which might arise from these differing views tends to demonstrate an integral

part of the Symposium - that of an open sharing of ideas. It is this sharing of ideas which marksour success as students and .. individuals.

The very fact that our committee has been drawn together from various departments within the university is indication of the importance and need for such a sharing of ' perspectives. For it is from these differing perspectives that a com- prehensive View is adiieved, one that is representative of the majority.

It is this type of inter- dlange whidm has marked the development of direction for the planning of Symposium '79 and which will determine tl'e overall success of: the exercise.

The success to date of Symposium '79 rests with those pecple of our community (University and

other) who have pledged and

given support to the idea ‘ from the beginning. Nearly everyone who has been approached has been more. than happy to help in any way requested, again the exceptim of one or two. We extend thanks to the Administration, in part-

Senate for their unanimous approval to cancel classes for November 7, giving all students the opportunity to attend the Symposium. To the Student Union who have been generous in their support — financial, moral and material, while Student Services have provided typing and copying assist— a ance.
