Editorial 7: Hookers in the middle, and

If you've been reading The Cadre lately, you may remember the situation that I've been returning to frequently. And - I have received a lot of comments on it, and people in the Student Union have been making phone calls and helping me out. Well, I'll update you on my problem, a problem which has had me laughing at every turn of events.

I dislocated my shoulder at St. FX a month ago, and had to cail 9-1-1, and I figured that it would be around $350 for the ambulance ride. And I figured that UPEI's health plan would cover most of it. Yet when I got the bill it was for $600. ****Now that's funny.**** So I submitted the bill to UPEI's insurance company, and in the mail I received the reimbursement cheque. I was hoping that it would cover at least 80% of the bill.

The cheque was in the amount of $160. Could this get any funnier? There is still a balance of $440 I have to cover, and I'm hoping that there was a mistake made. I'm not going to cash the cheque yet. A few weeks ago another Cadre employee was in Halifax and had to take an ambu- lance ride. Soon he will get a bill for $600, and have to go through this crap. How many other UPEI students are dragged through this garbage?

And this is a result of going to Nova Scotia. Imagine if something were to happen overseas.

I was out with some friends and we began talking about our voyages to Europe. If there is one thing I can impart to the readers of The Cadre, it is to travel. There is a great reason for this, and it applies to the vast majority of UPEI stu- dents. It is to boast that you are Canadian. You can't realize the sense of pride in being Canadian until you are abroad and accused of being American, and then being able to rebut that you are in fact Canadian. When people find this out their attitudes towards you will completely change. People overseas love Canadians. Take advantage of it.

I've gone to Europe by myself twice, and something which is taboo to speak of which has terrified me both times. It's scary being drunk in a strange place at 4am and having something hone in on loud mouth English speaking drunk- enness. Yet from talking to friends I real- ized that most young males had been approached by them. When I asked them what they thought at the time I got differ- ent responses, from "How many guys has she already slept with tonight," to "She

says 40,000 for sex, and you're standing there doing the math in your head. And then you realize that equals $18 Canadian..."

This is a part of travelling that I've never really thought about. And it is so wrong, yet if you're a male traveller who plans on going out to bars in Europe then you'll likely be faced with this.

The reason I brought that up was because it was only this weekend that I found out what a common occurrence it is. | was never warned of hookers. I had to have the crap scared out of me by a gross prostitute in Rome before I learned my lesson.

This week someone told me that Brandon's weekly Europe articles were good, and the same with Rebecca's trans- Canada article. Yet do they deserve so much space? Are they informative? Do they apply to the average student? Does anyone read them? Could there be some- thing better taking up that space in The Cadre?

I think travel articles are amaz- ing, and that students should like them. I don't know if they do, but the information contained in them is so o helpful, or at least funny.

It's strange how unpredictable criticism is. Last week I received the most’ criticism on the travel articles, yet I would

never had expected that. There must be some statistical way to explain what hap- pened. Random opinions from random people. I've given up all hope of guessing what people will think of an issue when it comes out. I loved last week's issue, and a lot of people didn't. I don't like this week's issue. Maybe a lot of people will love it. This week has a lot of opinion. A ton of people have come forward to write, and for that I'm thankful. Maybe it is opinion that people want. I don't like opinion, plain and siple. And I'm not fond of other things in this issue. The cover has poor resolution and I don't know how the colours will turn out. I love the photo though. And there is a ton of ads in this issue. Close to six full pages. That's a lot, and two of them are in full colour.

Oh, and last week the fonts got fucked. I would never have an article in

’ type writer font. It looked different, yet

the letters were too close together. I hope that never happens again. Times New Roman for the text, Arial for captions, and Arial Black for titles. It's that simple from now on.

I hope, but the way things have

‘been going I can't guarantee anything.

Well, I guess I can guarantee that I'm going to work my ass off for the paper. Or get an ulcer trying.
