Iviillionslres. had the call over men with brains, ambition, character and principles. Money.‘ seemed to be the only thing that counted, though one or two choosey maidens expressed a preference for handsome millionaires over homely ones. But‘ looks really don't matter. It was only the fat pocketbook that counted. )

The boys were a. Urifle more demanding of their wives than the girls were‘ of their husbands, for they not only wanted to marry heiresses, but girls who‘ were pléntifully supplied with IT, and were ravishing blondes who knew how‘ to cook. One forward-looking youth speciﬁed that his. girl should be a‘ money-maker and capable of supporting the family if necessary.

So far as this survey went. it showed that not one of the young people‘ of either sex demanded brains in their mates. Nor did they take into con- sideration the temperament and disposition of those with wlmn they were: proposing to spend the next thirty or forty years. Neither did they givs r single thought to the matter o! congcniality and whether they had the same interests, tastes and habits and would be able to coo together liks turtle doves or be predestined to ﬁght like cats and dogs.

Fortunately the vaporings of youth mean nothing. for the first breath o! real life knocks down all of our school girl and boy plans oi what ws are going to do and be and have as a cyclone would s. house of cards. The girl who was so sure that she would never marry anybody but an aged million- aire who would take her to live in a. palace and load her down with ropes of‘ pearls and put a ﬂeet of Rolls Royces at her command falls in love with an impecunious youth who installs her in a two-by-iour flat and presents her with a gas range and a vacuum cleaner and she is happy and content push- ing a pcrambulator instead of riding in a. limousine.

The boy who had fully made up his mind that no girl who wasnt a combination of Miss Moneybags and Theda Bars and Dolores Costello would ever get. him ﬁnds that the only woman in the world who really matters to him is some poor little girl who hasn't two frocks to her back and who isn't even pretty or vampish, but whosomehow is Just THE ONE for him; and he marries her and spends the balane oi his life working to support her.

So that's that, and Nature sometimes is in a benevolent mood and saves us from our youthful follies. even in marriage. Also it is fortunate that. the supply of millionaires, both male and female, is so strictly limited that the temptation of any youth or maiden to sell himself or herself for gold is pratically negligible. '

But one would liks-to tell these plundering youngsters that the very things that they purpose to marry for are the things that soonest. turn into matrimonial cinders. ashes and dust. Take money which the girls believe will secure their felicity. The one thing that money will not buy is happi- ness. It will not. buy love nor tenderness nor understanding nor consider-g. tion. and no woman is satisﬁed with a husband who is nothing but. a. meal ticket and a charge azcount. Some_of the most homeless women in the world own a dozen houses. Hearts break under brocade as well as home- spun. Look at the number of divorces among the mum-millionaires and you‘ will see how far money will go in purchasing domestic happiness.

And look at the men who marry for money. Nor. even the grace of God can keep the poor husband of o. rich wife from looking and acting like her pet Pomeranian. And feeling like LL And from wanting to bite the hand that feeds it. And the man who ma-rriu her beauty makes an equally foolish bargain because he is bound to lose out in a few years. In time ths most beautiful bathing-beauty ﬁgure changes its contour, the gloesiest hair grows dull and gray, the fairest cheeks lose their freshness and if good looks were all that the girl had, then what have you?

But the qualities that these boys and girls in their blindness overlooked as nonessential in a husband or wife are in reality the only ones m“ n», 1m. portant. The girls did not ask that the men they marry have lntsiliigsncs nor did lee boys look for that in their wives.
