Peter Rabbit was out hunting for, signs. He was tired of winter. andl he was baking for signs that Mist- ress Spring was drawing near. Looking for signs is always fun. Peter had left the clear Old Briar- patch and had gone over to the Smiling Pool. From there he went into the little swamp at the head) of the Smiling Pool. All the time he ivas looking for signs. He didn't know just what signs he was look- ing for. but he was sure he wnulr know them if he saw them.

Peter stopped and smiled. A Merry Little Breeze came danc- lng along and tickled his nose. Pet- er sniffed again. "Jimmy Skunk has been over here," thought Pet- er. ”I wonder if he's around here now. If he is out and around. that is one sign that Mistress Spring: will i in be here. Jimmy sleeps, most of the winter. He does come. out once or twice. but he doesn't, travel around much. He wouldn'tl come down here to the Smilingl Print. But he has been here. for; he's left his scent he-hind him." Pctcr sniffed again. There was no doubt about it. his nose was tickled with the scent for which Jimmy Skunk is famous.

Peter began looking around. He poked about all through that lit- tle swamp, but he saw nothing of Jimmy Skunk. Every few hops he stopped to sniff. Sometimes he smelled Jimmy. or thought he did. At other times he didn't. But though he looked everywhere, he couldn't. find Jimmy Skunk.
