Mr. Stevenson, the Glasgow million aire, who has spent a small fortune put- ting steamboats on the Central African Lakes and buiiding the waggon road that is to connect Nyassa and Tangan- yika, offers to guarantee the building of a narrow gang railroad past the sixty miles of cataract in the River Shire. He will furnish the entire tunds him- self if necessary. A steamboat now runs up the Zambesi and Shire Rivers to these cataracts, and the steamer Isala plies from the north end of Nyassa. The African Lakes Company is develop- ing this route, which, if Steveson’s Railroad is built, will make one thous- and miles of well-populated lake coasts and river banks accessibie by steam. The route will involve wagon travel ouly between Nyassa and Tanganyika, 210 miles, and it is rezarded as one of the most promising means of reaching the interior.
