We so often read about champ- ions here und there around the land. Now we believe we have a champion whisker grower right here in the village. Last week we met our good friend Fred Blnx- land, and he is sporting one of the finest jet black whiskers ever seen. Fred is not in the navy now but served there in years gone by.

Miss Margaret, Findley. has re- turned to her home here after spending the winter months in Boston, with her sister Lottie, Mrs. Walter Munroe.

Monday. May 30th will be I day for some forty little boys and girls here along with their par- ents to remember as it will be confirmation day for those catho- lic boys and girls and the first visit of His Excellency Bishop MacEachern. Already the kids are busy talking about the Bishop and their day.

Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Mccarten have taken up residence in the Village where Mr. Mccarten has been appointed manager of the Bank of Nova Scotia. replacing Mr. Gordon Bonnell. who was transferred to the mainland some time ago. Mr. and Mrs. McCarten are a young fouple and will be very welcome here.

1. Rural school construction grants: lost your SI30.000.00; has assisted In modernizing nearly all rural schools in the Province. '

Increased subsidies to lower cost of school books to parents: now,S40.000 per year. Result: school books now sold approximately at half price.

New policy for senior high schools. Grade XI and XII. Result: Establish-g ment of these schools in many rural centers throughout the Province en- abling rural students to obtain a complete high school education nour- er home. Salaries for degree status teachers for these grades pold wholly or largely by the Provincial Government.

The establishment this year of a new similar program for Grades 9 and I0 is expected to result in rural students from many one-room schools being accommodated in rural high school and other centers.
