AID ‘FOR THE FARMER

FARMERS must have their proportionate share oi the national income.

We shall secure them this through a system oi prices determined and announced in advance oi production. These prices will be based on a study oi the most recent iig- ures oi national income. The study will show whether total iarm income constitutes a ialr proportion oi the national income and, to the extent that it does not. prices will be adjused.

To tho extent that ireer trade, iull production and iull employment iail to pro- vide the former with a market in which he can buy and sell on equal terms with others, we oiier a reasoned and logical plan oi iull compensation, instead oi the hit-and-miss devices ior partial compensation, which have ior years been followed in recouping iarm- ers ior the loss which they have auiiered by selling in a free market and buying in a protected market. WE RELIEVE iishermeu, like farmers, are entitled to their lair share oi the National Income. WE PLEDGE OUIISELVES:

To enact legislation to assure our fishermen adequate basic prices;

To supply improved iacllltlcs so our great national home market will be fully de- veloped and served;

To promote intemaiioual trade and obtain the necessary export markets.

TRANSPORTATION

IT IS ESSENTIAL to keep freight rates low and to prevent waste due to the over- lapping oi the railways, water carriers, trucks, buses and air services. We will co-opev- ate with public and private enterprise to create a iully developed system of transporta- tion in Canada designed to furnish the cheapest and most efficient service possible. We are opposed to the amalgamation ci the two railway systems, believing that competition between them provides a more eiiiclent service than s single great monopoly.

WE WILL SEE that a special eiiort is made to remove the injustices ielt in the Maritime Provinces as outlined in the Duncan report and that other sectional inlustices also are roctiiled. '

WE WILL continue the developmentmi our Government-owned Trans-Qsnada Airways. We will encourage private airline systems, to give employment to our airmen and to speed up the development oi our country. We will see that Canada plays her part in the development oi intcmatlonai sir transportation by meansoi reciprocal agreements. -

VETERANS

WE WILL SEE that all veterans are given a square deal. We will ensure that every veteran shall not suiier material loss because oi war service. To this end, we propose:

Reinstatement into civilian liie oi veterans on a sell-supporting basis.

Provision at the country's expense oi such training and assistance as may be nec-

essary ior that purpose.

Assurance that all disabled veterans are generously and adequately cared ior.

Preference ior veterans in public mployment and no considerations oi political

iatronage to interiere.

As a direct result oi the continuous pressure in Parliament by Progressive 0on- lsrvative Members, some oi the principles which we were the iirst to advocate have been enacted into law, notably-

SOCIAL SECURITY

WE WILL ensure protection against unemployment, sickness, accident, old ago

Where social services are administered pmvinciolly wo will provide greats largo

enough to ensure adequate standards oi social security to all Canadians.

We will extend the application oi present contributory unemployment insurance

and make protection against unemployment a Dominion romonsibility.

We will introduce a Dominion-wide contributory retirement insurance plan. Until the beneiits available under this plan are adequate we will increase tho amount oi basic pension to at least $30 per month and lower tho ago limit to I ior both men and women.

We will modify. the regulations so that thriit will usvor again bo penalised.
