said, from the selﬁsh and narrow-minded arguments that had fallen from members that night, he was induced to think there had been some private acting behind the scenes. He never had reason to doubt the honor and integrity of our Treasurer ei- ther in a public or private capacity: and be trusted for the honor ofhimselfand of this club, he would never appoint a deputy from among them under the authority in- vested in him, if he did, it would speak vol- umes. This club should be like Ceasar‘s wife, “above suspicion.” He would there- fore call on members whq had expressed themselves in favor of this motion, if they had any sense of honor or ofjnstice left ; to retract their opinions and vote against the motion : iftbey did not, he hoped the press would do its duty.

Prince Bob arrived at the moment the question was put from the chair, having being detained by bad roads, Ile imme- diately inquired how the President voted, and as a matter of course voted with him. —On the division there appeared for the motion 13, against it 4. So the motion was carried.

It was then moved by Mr. Bumble Bee and agreed to, that the Committee be sup- plied with two gallons of Brenan 8L Co’s. whiskey. The chairman immediately wrote an order and despatched the messenger, who shortly returned, bringing two pounds of snuff, having delivered one given by the Major in mistake, in consequence of.not being able to read. The Major very hbe- rally handed his snuff about until the mes- senger again returned an eported, that the clerk would not let tti an it with-

out their sergeant’s security, which being given, the stuff was soon introduced with hot water, sugar and tumblers, ofthe tem- perance society size ; and after each mem- ber taking nine rounds, 'it appeared that the first rule of the club was likely to be infringed, the Chairman reported progress and asked leave to sit again. s
