Panthers beat Mounties Hockey Panthers win at home

JOHN NELSON’S POWER PLAY GOAL half way through the third period gave the UPEI Panthers a crucial 5-4 win over the Mt. Allison Mounties in AUAA play on Friday night. The victory could go along way towards securing a place for the Panthers in the 1994 playoffs next month.

Nelson’s goal came during a scramble in front of Mounties goalie Mark Cavallin while the Panthers were enjoying a two-man advantage. The powerplay goal, the only goal of the

third period, broke a 4-4 tie. The two teams were tied 2-2 after the first period. The Mounties, the division's perennial cellar-dwellers, played the Panthers tough and had numerous chances to tie the game. With just over a minute left, coach Jack Drover pulled his goalie for a sixth attacker but couldn't gain the equalizer.

The win was the second straight win over the Mounties at the Civic Centre. Mt. A defeated the Panthers 7-5 in their only visit to Sackville so far

The win on Friday night followed a superb effort last Tuesday as the Panthers, who played erratically in the first half of the season but have been playing solid, two-way hockey since Christmas, clobbered the Moncton Blue Eagles 9-4. The Panthers now boast a 4-13-4 record, good for 12 points, and are now unbeaten in three games. The Mounties remain in the basement with three points. The win

not only solidified UPEI’s hold on the last playoff spot, but also opened the door for them to take a run at the third-place Blue Eagles. The Panthers are now only four points behind Moncton, pending Moncton’s game on Friday against Dalhousie in Halifax. The Panthers played the Blue Eagles last Sunday afternoon. They return home to Charlottetown to play the league- leading UNB Varsity Reds twice this weekend to wrap up their home schedule.

“ENGINEERS DO IT WITH PRECISION”

ENGINEERING SOCIETY NEWS

IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS SINCE WE returned from the holidays, the Engineering Society went curling. It was enjoyed by all, including Shawn, who managed to cut himself.

Coming up the first weekend of February, a trip to the University of New Brunswick is scheduled for all interested parties to view the faculty of engineering at that institution. For more details, contact the Society executive.

Now that there is snow on the ground and it is pretty cold out, we thought that we would provide you a ist of how the different faculties keep Warm.

Yet Students: Bury themselves ina pile of fresh manure

Residence students: They set the Caf in fire and sit around it roasting

marshmallow.

Chemistry Students: Set off chemical explosions in the Cass Building. Business Students: They don’t try to get warm, they try to figure out if they can make a profit from the cold. Music Students: They beat and blow to their hearts’ content.

Artsies: They warm their hands over the grill at McDonald’s.

Biology Students: They use the Engineering microwave.

Philosophy students: They wonder if it’s really cold or if it’s just their imaginations.

Engineering Students: They light a bonfire using the X-Press.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: The colder it is, the more area you have to expose on the toilet seat.

Here is a little historical moment about our beloved BIO CLUB, just for your reading pleasure.

It all started way back in September when the Bio Club got its brand new (to us) tacky orange couch. The people gazed at it for hours thinking just how lucky they were to have a bright orange, tacky couch to sit on. Then, sometime later, a cushioned chair appeared from the heavens. A chair similar to those found in the seminar rooms at Main. Again, the people were both delighted and overjoyed. But still they wondered, why have we been blessed with such treasures? No answer came. And so

the people went on living their day-to- day lives with their tacky orange couch and soft cushioned chair. They were a happy people (simple, but happy). Suddenly, another gift from the great gods appeared. It was a chalk board. The people drew on this chalk board fora very long time. Then, one day not long ago, the gods looked down upon the people and said “let them sing and let them drink coffee.” The people were confused, not fully comprehending the message. But then the people saw what the gods had sent. Their very own Black and Decker coffee maker and a deluxe AM/FM clock radio. It was like Christmas! No longer did the people have to venture into the smoky Pit to grab a cup of brew. Now
