ENGINEERS OF THE FUTURE.
Electric Locomotives Will Enable Them to Wear Gold-Laced Uniforms or Even Dress Suits.
The Baldwin-Westinghouse electric lo comotive, just completed, is the first one of the kind in the world, and, besides the fact that it is expected to make seventy- five miles an hour, it has other claims to attention.
Not the least of these is the revolution that it will doubtless create in the lives of locomotive engineers, and they belong to one of the most important classes of citi- zeus in this country.
Shielded behind the glass windows that frame them in, with no smoke, soot,grime or grease, there is no reason why the en- gineers of the future should not dress ex- actly as the president of the road does, unless a uniform be deemed desirable.
In that case it may be gold laced and as handsome as that of a captain on an ocean liner.
The new locomotive is thirty-eight feet long by nine feet wide. It is mounted on eight wheels, forty-two inches in diame- ter. The wheels are of wrought iron, spoke-centered, with heavy steel tires. The machine without the motor weighs thirty tons. The electric equipment will add thirty tons.
A compartment eight feet square is all that will be required to operate the me- chanism, and the remaining space may be utilized in any way that is desired.
The electric equipment consists of four 250 horse-power motors, geared so as to regulate the speed. In appearance these motors are like those used on trolley cars, but they are much larger. One man will run them. He wili be called the driver. He will view the track from a window directly in front and above a powerful searchlight. Air-brakes will be operated just as on the steam engines. Ther? will be an electric air-pump, and it is claimed that it will be possible to stop a train in perhaps half the space of time that is now required,
° Funny Advertisements.
Curiously worded advertisements, which are funny without intent, are common in the London papers, it would seem. An English periodical offered a prize the other day for the best collection of such an- nouncements, and the following is the re- sult:
“Annual sale now on. Don’t go else- where to be cheated—~come in here.” “A lady wants tosee her piano, as she is go- ing abroad in a strong iron frame.” “Furnished apartments, suitable for gentlemen with folding doors.” ‘*Want- ed, a room by two gentlemen about thirty feet long and twenty feet broad.’ ‘Lost, acolliedog by a man on Saturday an- swering to Jim with a brass collar round his neck and a muzzle.”’
“Wanted, by a respectable girl, her pas- sage to New York; willing to take care of “Respectable widow wants washing for Tuesday.” ‘‘For sale—a pianoforte, the property of a musi- cian with carved legs.” ‘Mr. Brown, fur- rier, begs to announce that he will make up gowns, capes, etc., for ladies out of their own skin.” oper oysters with reference.” ‘Bulldog for sale ; will eat anything: very fond of children.’? “‘Wanted—an organist and a boy to blow the same.”’ ‘*Wanted—a boy to be nartly outside and partly behind the counter.’’ ‘“Wanted—For the summer, a a cottage for a small family with good drainage.’ ‘‘Lost—near Highgate arch- way, an umbrella belonging to a gentle- man with a bent rib and a bone handle.” “Widow in comfortable circumstances wishes to marry two sons.” ‘“Wanted— good hoys for punching.”’ ‘To be dispos- ed of, a mail phaeton, the property of a gentleman with a moveable headpiece as good as new.”
The last is a copy of an inscription paint- ed on a board which adorned a fence in Kent: “Notis: If any man’s or woman’s cows gets into these here otes, his or her tail will be cut off as the case may be.”

She was in tears.
“It’s a terrible blow,” she said. “I don’t know that I shall ever recover from the shock.”’
‘‘What’s the matter ?” he asked.
‘““My bloomers,”’ she sobbed.
He laughed with masculine heartless- ness.
“Have you just found out that they don’t fit ?’* he inquired.
“They’re not meant to fit,” she replied between her sobs, ‘‘and that’s not it at all. They’re not new.”
“Not new !” he exclaimed. “Has some conscienceless bloomer-maker dared to impose upon you by giving you——”
“Tt’s not the maker’s faul:,” she inter- rupted.
He began to be puzzled.
‘You don’t mean to say that you ac- cepted them, knowing that they were only——”
“No, no, na!” she cried. ‘You don’t understand. I wanted to be a new woman, and wear the new costume for women, and they told me that bloomers were up to date.”
“Well ?””
“Well, they’re not. They’re old; old as civilization ; noone knows how old they are.” ‘
“Not bloomers!” he exclaimed.
“Yes, bloomers,” she asserted. ‘Just look at these pictures of the Esquimaux women.”

A TRICK THAT FAILED.
This Woman Did Not Learn What She Wanted to Though She Told a Very Pretty Lie.
To the private office of a prominent jew- eler entered a middle-aged woman, richly caparisoned in flounce and furbelow and evidently forming part of the dough that makes up the upper crust. She held in one hand a diamond earring. The jewel was large and brilliant. With entire cool- aess of demeanor she said: “I lost the mate tothis. Will you be kind enough to tell me what it will cost to obtain another exactly like it ?” runs a story in the Phila- delphia Times.
The jeweler eyed her keenly and then cried: ‘tMadam, where did you lose your earring ?’’
The effect of this simple question upon the woman was surprising. She was evi- dently unprepared for the query, and there was certainly something in it that disturbed her. “It makes no difference where I lost it,’ she answered in a decid- edly sharp tone. ‘‘What will it cost me to obtain another exactly like this ?”’ and she held up the sparkling stone.
“Did you advertise for the one you lost, madam ?” persisted the jeweler, blandly.
“What bas that got to do with the mat- ter ?’’ she replied in an angry tone.
“Well, madam,” was the smiling reply, “if you advertise for the earring which you lost you might recover it, and then you would not be placed under the neces-
replace it, Advertise first, madam, and if you do not recover the jewel, come in again and I will answer your questions.” Saying this the diamond dealer polively bowed the now fretting and fuming woman to the door.
“Why will women lie in such small af- fairs,” said the jeweler, wearily, ‘‘and why will nearly every purchaser of a dia- mond look upon the merchant with whom he or she deals as a rascal? That woman hasn't lost an earring. She bas purchased a pair, perhaps on trial, and she wili go to nearly every jeweler in town with that pretty lieand endeavor to get a price upon that stone. Itis one of the finest of dia- monds and evidently came from one of our leading dealers, whom she insists on believing is engaged in a scheme torob her. The chances are that she will eventually get in the hands of some un- scrupulous merchant, whom she can find even in big stores. He will tell her that the stone is ‘off-colored’ and containsa flaw. He will show her a poor diamond of the same size as the other and fix upon it a price which he knows is iess than the fine brilliant could be worth.”—Buffalo Express.
Children in Africa,
A lady on a visit to one of the missionary stations in Eastern Africa has some cur- ious and rather surprising things to say about the native children. These sons and daughters of the Dark Continent are not so much behind the rest of the world as one might have expected, unless their extreme generosity be taken as a symptom of inferiority.
Nothing strikes us more forcibly than
savages, for both old and young share everything they get with one another. Sometimes when I have given a child a biscuit, I have felt really sorry to see the way in which the poor little thing has given a bit to all of its companions, till many atime nothing more than a crumb remains for itself.
In the same manner, if an old pair of shoes happens to be thrown away, and a child finds them, it immediately puts on one of them and gives the other to a com- panion, and thus the two hobble about all day, “one shoe off and one shoe on.”
The next day the shoes are sure to be handed to two others, who, in turn, pass them to two more; and so they goon, tillevery child in the school has had its chance.
Bishop Mackenzie’s party found games of whip-top, humming-top and many others as common among the Africans as the boys at home, so that they could teach them nothing new. At last, in despair, they thought they would surprjse them by making a kite. All the children as- sembled to see it; but it turned out lop- sided and heavy, and would not go up. So one of the missionar'es remarked to them, “You never saw anything like this before, did you ?”
Whereupon a little fellow replied, “Oh, yes; only the things we have are dif- ferent from yours, for ours go up, and yours go down.”

Thomas de Quincy is better known as the “English Opium Fiater.” It is a pain- ful reference to the vice of which he was long the victim.
Rev. George Ross wrote over the name of “Arthur Sketchley.” An eastern magazine says that it was the name of 4 schoolboy friend.
Sir Walter Scott’s little-known “Tales of My Landlord” was pubtished under the curious nom de plume, “Jedediah Cleish- botham.”
Henry W. Longfellow once used a pen- name. It was prefixed to his ‘‘History of Newbury,” and he chose “Joshua Coffin” for the purpose.
The real nameof “Bill Arp” was Charles H. Smith. The Bill A tp papers, shortly after the close of the war, attained the widest possible circulation.
“Barry Cornwall” was the assumed name of B. W. Proctor. Some of Barry’s songs will probably live as long as the English language is spoken,
Robert Southey’s pen-name was “Espri- ella Alvarey.” It was used in his letters from England. Most of his works were published over his own name.
J. Fenimore Cooper began to write under the pen name of “A Traveling Bachelor.” His travels and social condi- tion probably inspired the selection.
Francis Mahoney was long known among his acquaintances as “Father Prout,” his best-known book baving been entitled, ‘““Reliques of Father Prout.”

An acceptable substitute for the ordin- ary cuspidor is a small-sized flower urn. These in yellow or dark red harmonize with any surroundings not exceptional.
A new photograph frame is of large sil- ver links, alternately chaste and plain. Ribben is woven through these links and tied in an immense bow at the top.
Foran inexpensive marine water color, a frame of manilla rope, with: shells ap- parently confining the sailor's knots at the corners, satisfies the artistic taste.
A cushion for hat pins is one of the ap- preciated conveniences of the dressing room. Whether web silk or ribbon is the chosen material, cut two pieces six inches long and an inch and a half or two inches wide. Fringe each piece at both ends for a distance of nearly an inch. Lay the two wrong sides together evenly, and, be- ginning a halfinch from the fringe, sew them neatly one to the other by an over- hand seam, Shir one end of the bag thus formed, using double silk thread of the same coloras the ribbon, and fasten firm- ly. Stuff the bag till it is round and smooth, with wool if you aave it, shir the open end like the other, fastening well. Procure baby ribbon and tie around each endof the shirring, making a number of loops and ends.
Stall Tightening.
The laws and decisions about Sunday closing of liquor shops appear to be grow- ing more stringent all tne time. It is not many years since it became necessary by law to close them. Next all lights were to be kept out. Next those who were found in the bar duriug prohibited hours were subject to a fine, even though not buying anything, unless such person was an employe of the place or some member of the family. Now Judge Wilkes, of the Tennessee Supreme Court, has decided that even a saloon owner or bartender has no right to be in his saloon on Sunday for
any purpose whatever. When he decides that it shall be also unlawful for them te be in there on any other day of the week, the whole thing will be got down toa pretty fine point. There have been great strides made, not ouly in New York and Boston, but in nearly all the other great American cities during the last year in she matter of Sunday liquor law enforce- ment.
