Commenting upon Mr. Stead’s new book, “If Christ Came to Chicago,” the British Weekly rays :—

“No cutward reform would touch the real springs of our misery. This seems so obvious that it is hardly worth while to insist on it. Yet there must be many who, like Mr. Stead, believe that the soul ean eat and drink—that the i'ls of the world can be cured by the devices of ma- terialisem. Imagine Mr. Stead’s Chicago. There is to be no smoke. All the streets are to be paved. The railways are to be free. There are to be boating clubs, bathing establishments, people’s insti- tutes, reading-roome, concerts, theatres, free zovlogical gardens, improved cookery, » French chef available for those who want him. What remains of the old evil? Why, all remains. Sin and sorrow and death will not pass, and the Lord’s true Christ came to save us from these. We wil] not insist on the undoubted truth that the kind of public, pampered, supervised life which Mr. Stead thinks of as perfect bliss would be to many of us so hateful, that a garret in the east end, with freedom, would seem infinitely preferable. It is enough to eay that if men are to be made jhappy after this fashion it will be because the Divine has died in them and they have sunk tothe level of beaste. The sweetest, purest, bravest lives have been lived without any of Mr. Stead’s benefactions—withont even the wish forthem. Poverty has sought and obtained the true riches. In pain and sorrow Chris: has found the ministers that rend hearts open to his love, and His church has been to them a guide to eter- nity and a homefor the spirit. We be- lieve, and we are glad to believe, that Mr. Stead’s fulness of bread and shertness of work will never be possible in thie world. If they are, we shall need to pray more earnestly for grace so to pass through things temporal that we finally lose not the things eternal.

1. “From and after the passing of this Act every casual trader not on residiug in this Province doing busineas within this Province, commonly known as “ Commercial Travellers,” and every person not permanent- ly residing in this Province, and who sells either for himself or we A other rson any

Such license shall be granted and remain in force for the s of one year following the date upon which the said license shall be granted and no longer.”
