To assert our Provincial right to the fisheries is admittedly unnec- essary and useless, while the bill is as a matter of course not calcula‘ed to meet con- ditions which are not yet defined. Certainly it does not meet the expectations raised by the Lieutenant Gevernor at the opening of the session. In this regard the develop- ments of the session must be disappointing to those who took stock in the intimation that “a grand thing” for the Province was forthcoming—something that would re- lieve the taxpayers and place the Province in a position of financial independence. But the bill that will be discussed at every fireside is that on account of which the Hon. Donald Farquharson surrendered a principle of which he was, for many years, one of the loudest -exponents,—a principle cherished by thousands of temperance workers througheut the Province. These men will learn with amezement that the Government party has passed a liquor license law tos Charlottetown. Mr, Peters ia not a temperance man, yet he dared aot

introduce, under any disguise, a measure securing to those who paid a feeto the the right to sejl liquor. Mr. Warburton is pot a temperance man but he was constrained to withdraw a carefully prepared measure involving the

principle of license, on the re» presentation of the temperance men that it would be distasteful and in«

sulting to their convictions. It remained for Mr. Farquharson, who has for years past traded upon his temperance princi- ples, Mr. Farquharson, who was their trusted leader and councillor, to hetray the temperance men of P. E. Island and secure the passage of a bill based upon the principle of license which they abhor. How he contrived the business is easily seen. No one suspected him. He kept the mutter dark. He talked it over in caucus. Weak-kneed followers agreed to support it. Then he sprung it upon the legislature, and had it passed by his majority before the people of the country knew anything about it. The Temperance Alliance of Charlottetown raised a protest —which was treated with contempt. The Opposition fought the measure with the forces of reason and with eppeals to con- sistency and honour. But in vain. The brute force of the majerity had been ‘‘fixed,” and reason and consistency and benor and principle had to give way. How someof the honorable gentle- men who supported Mr. Farquharson’s license law will commend themeelves to their constituents we are at a loss to ide- termine. Mr. Peter Sinclair and Mr. Peter McNutt have not proved to be “rocks” upon which the temperance men could depend. Mr. D. A. McKinnon bas not realized expectation in so far, at least as temperance is concerned; and he ha: not made the matter better for himself, ir the eyes of bis constituents, by shirking the vote. this respect Mr, Campbell has proved himself to be an expert, while Mr. J. A. McDonald's store of knowledge bas een freely drawn upon to the advantege of the Legislature and the country. Mr. Sbaw and his fellow supporters of the Opposition leader performed yeoman’s service in their efforts to promo.e the interests of the coun- try and abate the evils of the Liberal Gov~ eromeot. It was pleasing to note pare ticularly the incredsing prominence of the younger members of the Opposition. Mr.

McKinnon, of Murray Harbor, is evidently oae of the most brainy and prudent men in the House. Mr. Birch’s ‘ability as a de- bater bas repeatedly been demonstrated j and Mr. Arsenauit has proved himself to be the worthy son of a worthy father. In Mr. DesRoches, of Mi~couche, the latest addition to the Upposition ranks in the Legislature, Tue Examiner is pleased to recognize agentlemaoof genuine ability —one who is destined, if he continue in polities, to take @ very prominent part in

the future government and welfare of the Province.

The late sestion bas accentuated the fact that the Liberals of this Province are utterly unable to grapple with the increas~ ing difficulties of the situatioa ; and their defeat at the first opporiusity may with certainty be anticipated.

YESTERDAY'S ELECTION.

Tue election of yesterday resulted in the election of Mr. McGregor by a msjority of one hundred and seventy. This was due largely to the fact that Messrs Newson and Wheatley withdrew from the contest at cne o'clock. Hadall the candidates remaiuved in the fieid, and all their supporters voted, it 1s possiblethat Mr. Donse weuld bave been elected. The thanks of Mr. McGregor and all opposed to Mr. Douse are there- fore due to Messrs Newson an! Wheatley, —particularly tothe former. The reenit of the election ia satisfactory. We feel sure that the interests of the city,in res- pect to sewerage and water, are as safe as possible in the hands of Messrs Smith, Halloran and McGregor.

Miss Lefurgey’s Recital.

This was the popular event of last evening. We congratulate Miss Lefurgey upen the character of her selections and the power of her rendition. Some of the critics may, perhaps, find faulte in Miss Lefurgey’s manner of reading, but every- one of geod |iterary taste must admit that she has done well not to pander to the de~ sire of thoughtless, feather-headed people for “something funny.” Most ot her readings of last evening were of the high- est quality,—and she bas exhibited an in- telligent appreciation of the authors’ meaning and feeling, as well as dramatic power of interpretation. The readings were set Off by good music, both instru- mental and vocal. Protessor Watts and Miss Gwendoline Welsn, on piano and cornet, Miss Collings and Miss Amy Earle all coutributed of their various talents and ability to this part of the capital entertain- ment. A reading by little Miss Hazel Hagbhes was exceptionally interesting. The sudience showed its appreciation of ali by liberal applause.
