A Warer Spovr was seenon the morning of the 6th inst. in the Bay off Au Lac ; a very unusual spectacle in this latitude. After it burst its track tothe south-east across the Bay was marked by the upheaval of water at least 60 feet high. —Post.

AN attempt was made on Saturday night to enter the store of Mr. Rattenbury on Wey- mouth street. ‘he burglars'were evidently frightened off by some persons living in that vicinity, The 4 ppraisers warehouse was also burglariously entered; but no goods were

taken.

Mr. Hotranp, the well-known St. John Decorative Painter, is in town and is prepared to furnish transparencies, coats of arms, and inscriptions for the Vice-Regal reception in the best style of .the art and most reasonable rates, is stopping at the Revere House. Samples of his work may be seen at Dodd's and Frazer's Drug Stores and at Medical Hail.

Mr. Beeeter lectured to our citizens on Saturday night, and preached to them on Sun day forenoon. The last discourse we have heard criticised as the best of those he deliv. ered while here. There are, of course, many who disagree with Mr. Beecher’s teachings ; but none deny his great power as an orator. The city is greatly indebted to Mr, Geo. E. Full for the opportunity of listening to one of the world’sjgreatest speakers.

Tue race between ‘‘Dean Swift” aad ** Look Uut,”’ which was to have taken place on Summerside Driving Park on Saturday, was postponed till to-morrow (Tuesday) week, owing to the disa ble state, of the weather and the track. The race for three-year olds was the only one which took place. For this there were three entries, viz: Mr, P. Brown’s colt, ** Long Bill,” Mr, Fitzsimmons’ colt and Mr. Mark’s colt. Mr. Fitzsimmons’ colt won the first, second and fourth heats, and Mr. Mark’s took the third, ‘* Long Bill” coming in third each time. ‘Thé first prize was awarded to Mr. Fitzsimmons.

Sin,—Wiuill you kindly report in your issue of to-day’s date, for information, that a lunatie -—John Donovan—is at large from the first of August, 1879. He got out of his bed during: the.nig¢ht, this being the third time in leaving his bed at night. Sle had been sent to the Poor House from the Lunatic Asylum, and has been in that institution from 1859. We have not as yet heard of his whereabouts. Auy person knewins where the above named inmate is, will pease leaveword at the EXAMINER Office.

Sir,—I have no desire to pursue this cor- respondence with ‘‘Codtish” any further—it having become rather personal in its nature.

Being maliciously attacked in the dark by an unknown enemy, | was compelled, in self defence, to take a shot at a venture, though it was far frem my ‘intention to hurt or wound any one unnecessarily.

But if my very ‘‘tishy” acquaintance, or any person is desirous of discussing ‘“‘the benefit of having.a Fish aud Game Protection Associa tion in this, as wellas in other Provinces—on its Memts—I have not the slightest objection to dg so, provided, of course, he comes out mavfully over his own signature.

The few remarks I am about to make were suggested by a paragraph I read in the Exam- INER of the 6th. The paragraph reads as fol- lows :—

“County Courr.—The Souris Circuit Court commenced its sittings to-day, Judge Reddin, presiding. Between three and four hundred cases are up for trial during the present term. ‘his is a sad commentary upon

in attendance. ‘l'alk no more of yellow fever, Colorado bugs, army worms and other pesti- lential afflictions. The end is not yet. Until litigation and those who encourage it can be dispensed with, no one need expect to witness, in this part of the country, at least, that mil- lenial time so long and so anxious!y hoped for by the majority of pious people.”

I have read somewhere of a country who managed nearly all their disputes with two Judges—no lawyers nor Jury, wind you; and it was only after these Judges used all possible means to settle the case that it was tried be- fore a Jury.

These Judges, in alinost every instance, suc- ceeded. There were no expenses attending this mode.

Could you not enlarge on this, and bring public opinion to bear on the matter, ere we are all swallowed up by those whom you justly call potato bugs and army worms ?

lf our farmers do not look sharp and bring about a method of settling their disputes otherwise than going to lawyers, they may | shortly have nothing to dispute about ; and, ‘moreover, try to live more frugally, in order to get out of the clutches of these sharks. They hold nearly half the land of the Province on mortgage, at such interest that no farmer can afford to pay. Look te yourselves in time, my friends, or you will have a class of landlords over you a thousand times worse | Use no strong! drink : lose no time from the farm (time is money) ; wear plain clothes : use more oatmeal | food ; use milk instead of tea—at least among | the younger members of the family,—and, my{ word for it, you will shortly become independ- | ent.
