PARTICULARS OF THE COAL MINE EXPLOSION,

The following details of the terrible mining disaster, of which briet telegraphic accounts have already appeared in our columns, throw additional light on that terrible affair :—The first intimation those on the surface had of the explosion was a terrific shock, followed by an outburst of thick black amoke through the air shaft. The first explosion was quickly followed by a second, stronger than the first, carrying pieces of wood, miners’ lamps, etc., hun- dreds of feet into the air. In a few minutes flames commenced to issue through the air shaft, with a loud, roaring noise, and in a short time the fan house caught fire and was quickly consumed. Meantime nine white men and four Chinese were brought out through No. l or the hvisting shaft. Gibson, the foreman, miraculously escaped from the lower slope by following the air course, making his way to the stable, where he was met by a rescuing party. The reseuing parties continued to attempt to reach the entombed men, but were unable to reach only fifteen. They were overcome with the after damp and had to be rescued with others. One of those noble rescuers, Sam Hudson, succumbed to the effect of the after-damp, Jules Michael who was injured in the explosion, says he was sitting im his cabin at supper in No, 2 shaft when he felt a concussion. All scrambled out but became insensills, and only one was saved of his four companions, whose dead bodies came up in the cage with him. Several could hardly appreciate their miraculous escape, owing to the dazed feeling which all felt who came out of the deadly pit. He represents the explosion as having been terrific. Everything became dark at once. John Lynch, who was badly injured about the face and head and had his hip fractured, has been demented ever since the explosion occurred. It is thought he will not recover, having enhaled gas. The others were uot injured seriously. though all were badly shaken up. Samuel Hudson’s hervic death is unaccountable. He was a miner of great experience, while those who were with him to rescue their fellows were comparatively imexperienced. He died from the effects of after damp. His brave deed was one of the brightest things in this carnival of misery. Ali day yesterday gangs of men endeavored to ex- tinguish the flames in No. 1 shaft, and it is believed the fire is under control. The Merriweather steam fire engine did good work in pumping water from the harbor down the air shaft. It is absolutely im- possible to think of getting at the imprison- ed men until the fire is subdued. There is a danger of the gas being driven into the fire and a second explosion. Even now fears are entertained that the whole place will be blown up. If it should occur the catastrophe would be the greatest record- ed in the history of coal mining. All hope of rescuing any One in the mines has been abandoned. The mines extend out from the shure more than a mile beneath the waters of the harbor, and as one looks over the waves, it is hard to imagine that beneath are imprisoned many dead fathers and sons of this city. Around the shaft the scenes are harrowing in the extreme. Rider and Scott of the Wellington mine went down yesterday afternoon at the risk of their lives in an endeavor to make an in- vestigation as to the manner of procedure. Chandler of Wellington mine has been indefatigable in his efforts to assist in the work of rescue. Several physicians are in attendance, tendering all the assistance in their power.

The business houses are all closed, the collieries shut up and the entire population is gathered at the scene of the disaster. Wives terror stricken, crying children and sorrowing fathers hover in the vicinity and mourn their terrible affliction. Occasional showers of rain cast a drearyness over the gastly scene. The imprisoned miners were all old settlers, their faces were familiar on the streets and there will be a void in many homes. The cause of the explosion is un- known. It is generally supposed to have been an explosion of coal dust, but the tale

will probably never be told.

A most peculiar and distressing accident befel a three-year-old child in Kansas City, recently. It fell in a tubular well 80 feet deep and ten inches in diameter. The child’s cries could be heard, but no means could be devised to rescue it, asthe body just fitted the diameter of the well.

Advices from St. Petersburg say that after a fortnight’s quietude the country is again in a state of uneasiness. Large ar- maments are being pushed forward with feverish activity. An order of the war ministry to the concentration of great masses of of troops on the frontier of Rus- sia.

How to Grew Potatoes.

Certain German scientitic men have been experimenting on the growing of potatoes. The principal conclusions to which the sages have come seem to be two in number. The first of them is that the vigour of the potato plant is always in direct proportion to the weight of the tuberele used for sets —a theory which certainly finds some sup-

rt in common sense alone, considering the young shoots for some time draw their sole nourishment from the mother potato. The second conclusion is that there is a great variety in the productive power, not only of different tubercles, but also of dit- ferent ‘‘eyes” in the same potato. It is found that the “‘eyes” at the top of the potato produce a much mere vigorous off- spring than those in the lower part, and the consequence is that those agriculturists who cut their potatoes in half before planting them are not well advised in cutting them vertically, but should always divide them horizontally, planting the upper half and using the other as food for cattle. But the best plan of all is to plant the tubercle whole, cutting out, nevertheless, all the “eyes” except those in the top part. Such being the principles laid down, we come now +o the experiments upon which they are based. These were conducted in a gar- den soil by Professor Gantz, the amount of crop produced by several different settings of potatoes beimg accurately estimated in statistical tables. It appeared that from tubercles divided vertically only five tons were produced per acre, and from whole potatoes seven and a half tons. The third sort were potatoes horizontally divided, which are set down as having produced nine and three-quarter tons, In this particular, however, some of the other professors do not agree with Herr Gantz, but maintain that, other things being equal, the whole potatoes will produce more than halves, however cut. On the fourth result, how- ever, all agree, and that is that the whole potatoes from which the lower ‘‘eyes” have been cut out produce eleven and a half tons per acre, or more than double the result shown by the sets first mentioned.
