Retreat is never a disgrace. - -Old Mother Nature.

Quite high up in a big tree. not far from the pond of Paddy the Beaver deep in the Green Forest, Mrs. Beauty the Wood Duck was occupying a new home. it was I different home from any she had ever had before. it was I small keg such as nails come in. A door- way had been cut in it and it had been put up in that tree by the Old Hermit who lived not far aw- ay. Mrs. Beauty had found it while looking for a hollow tree in which to make her nest. secause she hadn't been able to find a hollow tree she ventured to take P0559? sion of this new kind of house and she liked it. V

Now, in the dusk of eveninz. she was listening to a quarrel go- ing on just below her. The two who were quarreling were Prickly Poriw the Porcupine and. a little way below him. Bobby Coon. Mrs. Beauty knew she had nothing to fear from Prickly Porky, but she had everything to fear from Bobby Coon. Bobby Coon was blusierinz. saying what dreadful things he would do to Prickly Pork) if the latter did not get out of his way. It was bluster that diduit iinrk. Prickly Porky is naturally obstin- ate. That is one reason he wouidnlt move.

Bobby Coon was doing a lot of growling and snarling and pre- tending to be very. very fierce. It was all bluff. Yes. air, it was all bluff. Prickly Porky knew it. Finally he tried I little bluffing himself. He backed down a little toward Bobby Coon. Bobby back- ed down too, and he did it hastily. Prickly Porky began switching his tail back and forth. Suddenly some- thing stung Bobby Coon on the side of his face and on his nose. ll didn't hurt much. Both stings hurt very little more than if he had been pricked by sharp bram- bles or thorns. Bobby brushed a paw across his face and nose. He felt something sticking in at both places and he tried to brush them off. They didn't brush off. They pricked more than ev.-r.

Bobby backed down to the ground. He wanted to gel rid of those things sticking in his face. He sat up and tried again to brush them off. They didn't brush

off. Bobby knew what they were and knowing didn't make him feel any better. He knew they were a couple of little spears such as Prickly Porky carries in his coat and on his tail. They are had little spears. They are bad because they do not pull out easily. This is be- cause they are covered with tiny barbs. Instead of pulling out they work in deeper and deeper. in
