We have lrnd an opportunity to test the Pntent Safety L.-iinp and I.:tmp Feeder of .\Ir. Jolrtt Nowell, of this city, in regard to the measure of protection their construction allltrds. In the ttinls to which we subjected them, we endeavored, without o-fl'ect, to produce explosions of the vapor of the fluid mixed with air, and to burst them try the pressure of the vapor alone. The principle adopted by Mr. Nowell is that of the well known Davy Lamp. He has so combined the ports, that we are satisﬁed that all risk of as losive action is removed.

Mr. John Nowell, of Boston, has exhibited to ma a Lamp, and also containing vessels, furnished with wire gauze protectors, upon the principle of Dsvy'a Safety Lamp for miners He has used both these instruments before me with inlliimtnablo ﬂuids, and in both, when not an Era, the lame was arrested by the wire gauze, which is coated with silver. If the instruments are faithfully constructed, and carefully attended to. so that the wire gauze does not sulfur in- jury from corrosion, wear or violence. I am of opini- on that the protection will prove elfsctual against ox-

plosiou. Nothing short of this conviction would in- duce ms to countenance the continued use of the burning ﬂuids, so called, asl have thought they ought to be entirely disourded. if not prohibited from due; no frequent and dreadful are the accidents occa- sioned by ignorance and carelessness.
