CARE OF THE EARS.

Never attempt to apply a poultice to the inside or the canal of the ear.

Never drop anything into the ear until it bas been previously warmed.

Never wet the hair if you have any tend- ency to deafness. Wear an oiled cap when bathing and refrain from diving.

Never scratch the ears with anything but the finger if they itch. Do not use the head of a pin, hairpin, pencil tips or any- thing of that nature.

Never put milk, fat or any oily sub- stance into'the ear for the relief of pain, for it soon becomes rancid and tends to excite inflammation. Simple warm water will answer the purpose better than ang- thing else.

Never be alarmed if a living insect en- ters the ear. Pouring warm water into the canal will drown it, when it will gen- erally come to the surface and can easily be removed with the fingers. <A few puffs ef tobacco smoke blown into the ear wili stupefy the insect.

THE EARTH.

The astronomers say the earth is a rimg of matter which was ‘‘shot off’ by the sun 66,060,000 years ago and which gradually worked itself inte a ball or globe.

It is believed that when the earth was aé its maximum heat, say soon after parting with the sun, its bulk was 445 times great- er than at present..

According to the astronomical, geolog- ical and anthropelogical evidence, mam first appeared upon. the earth 650,000 years ago, :

The 1i@an temperature of the earth, taken as a whole, is 50 degrees F., and the average annual rainfall is 30 inches.

The landed surface of the globe con- tains, as near as 46 js possible to ascertain,, 83,600,000,000 aczes.

Three-fourths of the landed area is unfit for cultivation on account of mounbtains,, deserts, swamps, etc.

The earth rotates from west to east, but allof the astronomers in the world are not equal to the task of telling why.

Some geologists and astronomers profess to believe that the earth is solid. Others say that it isa molten mass enveloped ia & pellicle of land.

Lord Kelvin, a noted authority, rejects the views of Balk, Langley et al. and de clares that the earth is 100,000,000 years old.

The velocity of the earth’s rotation om its axis at the equator is 1,440 feet per sec- ond, or nearly 25,000 mites a day.

Careful measurements prove that the average curvature of the earth is 439 inches to the statute mile.
