Hockey Panthers clip Blue Eagles’ wings

Hockey at its finest — The only way to describe the game Sunday as the Univer- sity of Prince Edward island Panthers scored three un- answered goals in the third period to defeat the Univer- site de Moncton 4-1 in Atlantic Universities Athletic Association hockey at the Charlottetown Forum.

The win gives the Panthers sole possession of first place in the AUAA three points ahead of the UdeM Blue Eagles.

The first period was very close-checking and the Blue Eagles outshot the Panthers 10-9 and if goaltender Tony Haliduick hadn’t come up with some big saves the Blue Eagles 'would have tallied earlier than they did.

At 14:06 of the second period defenceman Steve Fulton of the Panthers picked off a clearing shot from a Moncton player and danced in all alone to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

Moncton threatened to tie the game several times but Haliduick thwarted any chance of the equalizer and it wasn’t until 19:42 of the second period did Serge Roy beat the rookie netminder.

Moncton outshot the Panthers once again 13-12.

The first two periods being even, UPEI decided to do something about winning the game and came out with some hustling forchecking in the Moncton zone.

Garth Arsenault beat Blue Eagles goatender Danny Berube after a pass from Gordie Roche squirted out in front of the Moncton goal. Doug Currie scored at 12:24 on a backhand shot which beat Berube high on the glove side and then Randy Muttart set up Greg Gravel who slid the puck underneath a sprawling Berube.

The line of Doug Currie, Todd Sutcliffe and Danny Revell stood out among the UPEI forecheckers and did a great job throwing the body in the Moncton zone.

UPEI’s defensive corps also did an excellent job in clearing the front of the net and keeping the handle on things, especially Rob Moffat and Steve Fulton.

It was the second win of the weekend for the hockey Panthers as UPEI defeated the Mount Allison Mounties of Sackville, New Brunswick 5-2 Saturday at the Forum.

The Panthers led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by Greg Gravel.

Mounties Stu Peats tied the

game at 9:35 of the second ’

period and then Ron Car- ragher scored UPEI’s second goal which Mounties’ players argued was kicked.

Danny Revell scored the winning goal at 12:27 of the second after he pounced on a loose puck after a scramble in front of the Mt. A. goal.

Steve Fulton and Ron Carragher scored for the Panthers in the third period which turned out to be one of the most comical as Mount A. coach Jack Drover dis- played his version of ‘Billy Ball’.

He changed goaltenders and as soon as the new net- minder had a shot his way and the play was whistled down the starting goaltender came back on the ice. Pro- bably just for a rest as the Panthers pelted 35 shots at him through the game.

The Panthers are still in the number two spot in the coun- try according to the Canadian Inter-University Athletic Union rankings release Monday and the Moncton Blue Eagles being the only other AUAA team in the national poll fall to number five.

UPEI are on the road this weekend as the Panthers travel to Moncton to face the Blue Eagles.

It was another great home— stand for Panther teams last weekend and it looks as though all teams will make it to post season play and with that the possibility of at least two more AUAA titles in the trophy case for UPEI.

The major attraction was the game between Vince Mulligan’s Hockey Panthers and the Universite de Monc- ton Blue Eagles before a packed house at the Char- lottetown Forum, Sunday afternoon.

The teams played close- checking hockey and the game was even with the teams playing to 0—0 tie at the end of one frame and 1-1 at the end

Tony Haliduck was superb in goal and was named Norton Jewellers Player of the Game and it was the second time a UPEI goal- tender received the aw'ard as Dave Reig was named player of the game the night before in UPEI’s 5-2 victory over

UPEI may have won the game but in the battle in the stands was won by the Monc- ton fans who really came to watch the game. Boo! to almost 2000 . people who didn’t get behind the' Panthers and Hurrah for the Moncton fans because they know the words to the Canadian National Anthem. _

I’ve been to happier funerals, although I’ll have to give credit to UPEI behind the Panthers bench who tried to edge on the rest of the crowd. V

Star Centre Mike Morgan will be out for about a month with a broken bone in his foot and that certainly is a blow to the Panthers al- though Dan Stoberman did a good job starting for Morgan Saturday afternoon. The team has a lot of depth and it should compensate for his absence.

Somebody check the rim on the basketball net at the South End of the Alumni Gymnasium and if there is a bend in it send the repair bill to Panther forward Trevor Willock.WhataJAM!! _

Speaking of repairs — Get that clock fixed at the Gym also because it disturbs the flow of the game and, while you at it. get a new PA.

system, will ya! Holy Cow, junior high schools have better facilities than UPEZ.

The Lady Panthers did a great job also on the weekend stealing a game from Dal- housie and getting revenge on the Saint Mary’s Belles Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Panthers have a record of 8-1 and are chasing the University of New Brunswick for first place.

Paula Edward, Tracy MacEachern and Debbie MacAloney were impressive on the weekend 'as they hustled and grabbed and

gobbled up rebounds to pace the Lady Panthers.

The Volleyball Panthers finish the season next week— end against Dalhousie. They had a respectable week- end also, winning one of two matches at Alumni Gym- nasium. Linda Dykerman had a good weekend with 24

kills, an ace and 3 blocks.
