St. John’s Church has been recently painted and papered and looks beautiful. We are informed that the receipts of the bazisr will wipe out the cost of the work done. Success to the Ladies’ Aid Society.

L. H. Davies, Esq , M. P., delivered a political address at O'Leary Hall on Thurs- day evening last. He hada large house, it being the occasiion of the opening of the new hail. The address painted in the usual grit colors the political situation of Canada, which was declared worse than desperate, and then attempted to give the remedy for those evils (grit ascendency of course) and foreshadow a utopian future when Annexa- tion would be forgotten, Imperial Federa- tion abandoned and some kind of reci- procity—-nct the unrestricted article— bringing balm to all our ills, As usual at grit meetings, the address was replete in extravagent statements, statements which carried their own refutation on their face.

Crapaud Literary Soeiety.

The above Society was revrganized for active work last Thursday evening. The night was very cold, consequently, there was not a very large attendance. Readings, recitations and dialogues were given by the talent of the Society, to the satisfaction of all present. The above Society will meet on Friday evening of each week. Seventy men were tried, and eight were sentenced to be strangled; four to lose all civil rights and deportation to Siberia for life; thirty-three to long terms of imprizon- ment, and twenty-five were acquitted,

Lonpon, Dec. 29 —The authorities ap- pear so strongly convinced that the Dublin explosion was part of the work of a band of conspirators that they have sent a de- tective to Biarritz to keep guard over Mr. Gladstone and protect him from outrage, Home Secretary Asquith is also protected.

Wicuitra, Kansas, Dec. 29.—Thomas Griffiths, living six miles north of Leon, left his three children at home yesterday, while he went totown. On his return he found only the burning embers of his house and the charred remains of his three children. He is insane from the shock. Lonpon, Dec. 29.—The Liverpoo! corres- pondent of the Daily News thinks there are no grounds for believing that the steamship: companies will give up their steerage trade. They expect, he says, the United States Goverument will relax shortly its stringent quarantine regulations, when it has been shown how much easier it is to watch a few seaports, instead of the whole Canadian frontier.

Moncton, N. B, Dec, 23.—Havelock Jolkn- son, @ farmer belonging to Shemogue, parish of Botsford, came to Moncton a fortnight ago to-day with poultry and other produce for market. He remaiced here two days and Saturday night, the 10th inst , sold the bal ance of his stuff to a dealer, saying he desired to return hcme. Johnson had between fifty and one hundred do/lars on his person. He was last seen Saturday night in company with @ young man named Durant. They were drinking and Durant appeared to have money while Johnson had none.
