In recognition of twenty-five years of faithful and painstaking service as Secretary of the Law Society, Mr. W. E. Bentley, K.C., was presented with a gold watch as a token of appreciation at the fifty- seventh annual meeting of the So- ciety yesterday.

The President, Mr. M. Alhan Farmer, was in the chair. The minutes were read and adopted, and the financial report was presented and approved. ~

Several routine matters were tak- en up and dealt with.

The President, Mr. Farmer, than presented Mr. Bentley with the gold watch in appreciation of his twenty- five years service as Secretary of the Society.

Remarks of appreciation were made by the President, Mr. N. W. Lewther and Mr. D. E. Shaw, K.C. Mr. Bentley replied feelingly and thanked the Society for the expres- sions voiced and the gift.

Fire Destroys Lighthouse On Brighton Range

The back light of the Brighton Range was totally destroyed by a spectacular blaze at an early hour yesterday morning. The fire which was discovered about 4 o'clock by the keeper, Mr. Joseph Purcell, menaced the two neighbouring summcr cottages, the property of Mr. L. '1‘. Lowther and Mr. Mac- Kay, The firemen who were promptly on the scene experienced great difficulty in preventing the two buildings igniting. The blaze in the upper part of the lighthouse had reached such proportions at the time of their arrival that all attempts to extinguish it were vain. As no water was available, the fire- men stood by with the chemical engine ready to cope with the blaze should it spread to the cot- tages.

It is thcuflrt that the fire or- iginated by reason of some defect in the lighting apparatus. There were several sharp explosions when kerosene drums burst with the heat_ An immense mushroom of flame burned about a quarter of a minute after the pressure supply tank burst.

The damage is estimated at about $1,000.

Miss Florence Calms has return- ed to the city after spending sever- al months with relatives in Bos- ton.

Mr. Arthur Low of Boston motor- ed home last week and is visiting his uncle, Mr. A. W. Stewart, New Wiltshim.

French Disappointed

In French quarters disappoint- ment over the setback to stabiliza- tion plans was so great there was talk of ucijourning the conference a month or six weeks, until the ques- tion should have been settled. Lead- ing tile European “gold bloc" the French were adamant in their stand that nothing final could be conclud- ed until currencies were stabilized. But no word is expected from Washington for some days. Presi- dent Roosevelt is on his holidays. Putting forward the French plan of production-consumption equaliz- ation, M. Albert Sarraut, French Minister for Colonies, gave the dele- gates a. broad hint that if the Con- ference does not succeed in its eco- nomic aims France may be compel- led to tum back on herself and her colonies.

Runclman Sympathetic

. Rt. Hon. Walter Runclman, Pres- ident of the British Board of Trade, was sympathetic. Sir Philip Cun- llfife-Lister, British Colonial Secre- tary, asserted that if such steps as the French proposed were to be taken than the production-con- sumption equalizing schemes must deal not only with commodities but Possible substitutes; they must cov- er all producers of a certain com- modity, be fair to consumers and producers alike and must be admin- istratively practicabie with a lasting value.

Mr. Runclman pointed out with some vigor that Britain had already taken steps to regulate production with the object of raising prices. “If it is necessary to go further we are ready to go further,” he added, "al- though I admit there seems to be something paradoxical in a. policy which attempts to raise prices with- out raising the cost of living. We are prepared to consider co-operat- ing in schemes of regulation but in each case the scheme should be put forward with the support of at least a large proportion of consumers, and should contain adequate provi- sion for safeguarding the interests of the consumers."

automobile after putting a. white hood over my eyes. I am not sure which way they headed out of town.

I couldn't say how long a drive we took, but it seemed about eight hcurs_ And the same time coming back today when three men again were in the car with me. There wasn't very much conversation during the ride back.

After we had gone about 30 miles out of 5t. Paul we stopped and met another car. There were sev- eral men in it. ‘There I signed four ransom notes while laying on the bottom of the machine.

"Mien they took off the hood and placed some gogglesover my eyes. They were taken off just before we pulled up to the house where I ‘was held. I couldn't recognize any of the country we went through because I had those goggles on my eyes all the time and they were covered inside with cotton_

Finally, after I had been driven quite a long time, we stopped at a house. It was a. two story house somewhere in northern Minnesota although for a time I had thought it was in Wisconsin. The windows were boarded up.

Treated Courteously

It was dark. 'I‘here was a light in the room where I was put. The room. was furnished simply and the house looked like a farmhouse cr- a city home. It might have been a. farmhouse on the outskirts of the city. I heardtraffic noises.

They came in to see me in the room anytime I wanted anything. 1' called them when I wanted something‘ and they treated me nicely. I asked for anything I wanted and ordered anything I wanted.

It is hard to say how old the men were for I got only fleeting glimpses of each. Every time they came into the room I had to turn my face to the wall or face the side opposite from the kidnappers.

I believe there were five or six men all together.

Kept Informed

They kept me infomrcd as to the progress of the negotiations. sun- day afternoon about 3 o'clock they came up and told me they had some “good news." That ivas that the ransom money had been paid. I don't even know now how much money was paid. I had good simple meals during my imprisonment, nothing elaborate; _

That night, Sunday, we started out after dark. two men, the driver, and myself. They put the goggles back on me and after another ride they left me out at Wyoming on the main highway. I llad some money. They made no effort to take it from me while I was a prisoner. They didn't say anything after letting me go and it was kind of dark so I couldn't sec what kind of a car was ilscd.
