Rctidy was even then sitting on the doorstep as disappointed a Fox as had ever missed a good dinner. He had missed catching Peter by no more than a jump or two. How glad he was that John- ny Chuck was no longer using that "muse. He was sure that this was so, because across the doorway had been one or the wonder-Iui wehs hat Madam Orb, the Spider, wea- yes. or course. if there had been myone at home, she wouldn't have lone this. This is what Peter thought, anyway.

"Who is 'me'?" growled the voice down below him.

"Just Peter Rabbit." replied Peter, still in that small trembling voice.

"Because." said Peter, and his voice shook a little, "Reddy Max is sitting on the doorstep right now."

”What of it?" growled Johnny Chuck. "This is my house, and I don't want anybody else in it. l always drive intruders out." He

South's proper first response was three notrump, which of course North would pass.
