Tue Vicrorta Bainee.—Mr. Forbes, of the Hamilion Bridge Company, and Gov eromenot Engineer McMillan, visited the site of the proposed stee! bridge at Vic-~ toria veeterday. Th2 site was considered most satisfactory, and the work ef building the bridge will be proceeded with @8 #@00n as possible. The bridge is tobe 109 feet steel span. The approaches are to confine the water into 10@feetepan, and are to be built three feet higher than the present ones, The eteel span will be supported by creosoted piles. it is expected that the bridge will he comyleted by the lst Sept. Earnscliffe Notes.
The death of Mr. Stewart Mutch on the 22nd of May was one of the many sad events that have occurred here during the past few montbs. Mr. Mutch was in his 49-b year, ard leaves a-widow and four vonog children to mourn their great lose. He was ove of the most highly respected gentieman in thie Province, being Lonor~ able and justin a!l his dealings, courteous, obliging and kind to all,and with a cheer- ful disposition that made him a general favorite. One of his many virtues was his great uvselfishness—a rare virtue DOWw- a-days, when 80 mauy people seew to be living in litle worlds of their own, think-~ ing tittle and caring less for the feelings of their fellow men. Mr. McRae is one of the most enterprising, tal - ented and popular youog men in the country and is lookedupon by many as one of our next representatives from the dis» trict in the next Local House. Mr. McRae’s pomination as one of the candidates ot this lietrict, would arouse great enthusiasm among our young men, and with a good colleagne he would sweep the District.

In view of the utility of this bridge as apublic work, the opin:on has been expressed that Mr. McPhee should ye.asmall grant from the Government. Now would, doubtless, bs a good time to make an application of this kind, when the “golden stream of blood money” is flowing into the treasury. But we doubt as tothe success, seeing that, during the past eight years the Government have spent on keeping the roads ard bridges in Karngelitfe in good repair, the large sum of three dollars and ninety-one cents ; and we musi not achieve a reputation for want- ing the earth, by asking for more money. We intend aeking for a coal-mine or two, but not till che next election.
