Tue Carstake Stakes.—A Montreal des- patch says: A writof attachment has been issued, on behalf of <eorge Carpenter, against the fund of the Carslakes’ Derby sweepstakes, which amount to $50,000, and which are in the hands of Molsun Bank. The plaintiff, in his declaration, claims the money is as forfeited, being the proceeds of a sale of tickets in ‘‘Carslakes’ Derby sweeps,” a lottery which is in violation of law.

Damage By Lienrninc.—During Thurs- day night’s storm a cow owned by Nelson Scott was killed at Southampton, near Amherst. The lightning struck the animal on the nose, splitting her in two as thoroughly as if she had been killed by a butcher. During the same storm a barn belonging to Mrs. Landells, at Lower Maccan, was struck by lightning but with- out doing any very serious damage. Two trees about fifty yards from the house of Herbert Harrison, were also struck with the lightning. For about ten minutes the dust on the streets was blown about in such clouds that pedestrians were obliged to hasten to shelter, the dust being so dense that they could not see many yards ahead.
