will do well in school, that they treat people in the community nice, and that they will develop into good people. It’s my hope that at the end of this year, we’re a step ahead as an organization and as individuals in terms of development. We’re trying to build a structure that will endure year after year after year. I hope that at the end of this year (the players) will look back and see that they’ve played their hearts out, they’ve enjoyed themselves, and they’ve learned a lot along the way.”

The new coach cites several coaching influences, including Doug Currie, Gordie Whitlock and Ron Carragher, but admits he learned most from former Rocket coach Alain Vigneault, who took Kelly with him this summer to coach the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.

“(Last) year probably turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me,” he explains. “I was offered an opportunity to work with the P.E.I. Rocket as an assistant. Each day I focused on listening and learning, because I knew my opportunity to learn from Alain Vigneault would only come around once in my life. People would pay a year’s salary to sit and work with this guy...I could read a million books and not pick up that much stuff.” Taylor describes Vigneault, a former head coach of the Montreal Canadiens, as “one of the very best.”

One of the biggest questions going into the season concerns Joel Ward, last year’s captain, Atlantic University Sport MvVPand All-Canadian. Ward will not return for his fifth year, but coach Taylor isn’t worried. “We’re not looking to replace Joel Ward. The void left by him will be replaced by committee. There’s opportunities out there for a lot of guys in that room to really step up and fill the space. Nor do we want to replace Joel.

We’re building a different team and our own identity here.

“A player like Joel Ward you just don’t replace. Joel has been a great ambassador for this university and this team. He’s left a legacy that he can be very proud of, and we’re happy for him that he’s moving up to the professional level. He’s served this university proudly and we’re behind him 110%.”

The Panthers, says Taylor, pride themselves on their character. ““We have a lot of great character people on this team, a lot of people that care a lot and are willing to work hard fora goal. We’ Il be a hard-working, physical, fore- checking team that stays close to their systems and competes hard in the defensive, offensive and neutral zones. We will battle, we will compete, we will stick together and we will be disciplined.”

As for his team’s strengths, Taylor is confident. “We have a strong core of forwards, our goaltending is rock-solid, and we have a strong core of returning defensemen. I’m confident in the group of individuals (in the dressing room). We have a strong nucleus and we’re going to compete.”

Regardless of the Panthers results on the ice, Taylor guarantees character and effort. “We’ll be a team that you can be proud of. We’ll bring a work ethic that you can believe in. We’ Il bring the sportsmanship that will make you proud. And we’re helping to develop the people that will make our communities better.”

Sounds like a convincing argument to support UPEI hockey.

The coach also predicted the Philadelphia Flyers to win the Stanley Cup.

And by Philly, he means the almighty Toronto Maple Leafs.
