Looking over the summaries of Baltimore Raceway last week we note where Freddy Hawk (Avery) won a 52.500 purse from a very fast field. time. 2.14 415 for 1 1116 miles. The same night Colonel Dan. owned and driven by Bob Ryan. won the 2.15 pace in 2.09. Colonel Ds.n had been laid up for repairs and we are glad to see him back in the limelight agaln.. Up in Quebec City Louis Praught won a classified pace with Geor- ges Brook in 2.12 and at Gorham. Milne. Upton Ciegg was second in the 2.15 pace won in 2.11 (US. We have looked carefully through the summaries but see no men- tion anywhere of Mary Merk hav- ing startcd.

Next week the Maritimes' pre- mier racing event, Charlottetowrrs Old Home Week. will be in full swin-g. I-lorses. owners. drivers and grooms with their many friends, will be on their way be- fore this meets the eye. For up- wards of thirty years Charlotte- town has been konwn as a good place to race at, a place where even the children know all about the horses and friendly greetings welcome the visitor. The largest crowds that ever attended races in the Maritime: have graced the Charlottetown stands and there is always plenty of enthusiasm shown when a popular winner's nose hits the wire first. The Directors have gone to a great amount of trouble and expense to provide a fast track and all its stables and appointments and the best racing program with the largest purse money offered in these Provinces by the sea. Look- ing over the classes and entries we are ure it will be a memor- a-ble meet. one that no lover of harness racing can afford to miss.

Alexandra district reported that he cut over and destroyed two pheasant nests this summer while hay cutting on his farm. He felt very badly over the incidents as he does considerable hunting every fall. He came out with this point- ed statement: "I think that every farmer who hunts should pay a license fee of a dollar and the money used to purchase flushing bars to save our upland game." Incidentally this farmer feels that men in his profession should be tax exempt in respect to fishing.

This columnist has advocated action in the matter of supplylnr. flushing bars to farmers for use on their mowers. The destruction in the thousands of upland gam.-. bird one every summer is, to a great extent. a.needless waste of valuable game and could be great- ly lessened by-the application of a reasonable amount of time, money and energy. In this col- umnist's opinion for more Huns and pheasants are llqudatcd in the egg stage before they have a chance to break the shell than are shot by hunters in the fall. Num- bers of observers are asking this question: "Why lament over the number of Rum shot in the open season when a far greater num- her are wiped out before they have a chancevto see the light of day?" - -

Many hunters feel that our Game Associations are pursuing a sliort sighted policy in their atti- nude toward flushing bars. the ad- option of which has been advo- rated on several occasions during the past few years. A number of farmers have spoken to me and requested information regarding this method of saving nests in their laayfields with st view of In- stalling them privately and at their own expense. The bar is not expensive. It consists of a bar of wood or iron attached to the yolk with a number of chains attached that drag through the hay thfv length of the horses in front of the knife blades. Local Baseball Playoffs Discussed

At a meeting nf the City Base- ball League held at the Depart- ment of Physical Fitness office last night under the chairmanship of-president Danny Maccormaclc. it was decided that the first and fourth place teams and the sec- ond and third will meet in the playoffs.

In semi-final play the teams will meet in a best two out of three game series, while the fin- alists will meet in a best three out of five.

The league will suspend activi- ties during Old Home Week. it was decided last night. and play- offs will commence on the first open date following the playing of the three remaining games of the regular schedule.
