It is estimated that over twe thousand children and as many spec- tators assisted in the celebration. Speeches were made by Revs. D. D. Currie, Dr. Watters, G. W. M. Carey, L. G. Stevens, G. A. Hartley, and a number of laymen. The Teleqraph, commenting on the celebra- tion, says :— ‘

‘Inthe British Isles and in this country there has been of late a series of celebrations in honor of the first establishment of a Sunday School by Robert Raikes, of Gloucester, printer, philanthropist, etc. ‘The idea of Sun- day School is so simple that it seems strange that it should only be a hundred years eld, or that a single individual should be credited wita it. In this respect the claim of Raikes resem\les that of several inventors and scient- ists. They may not have been the only persons who made a particular discovery, but it was under them that it was most thorough- ly leveloped. The Rev. Mr. Stock, who was Mr. Raikes’ coadjator; Rev. Dr. Burns, of Glasgow; Catherine Bowen, immediately be- fore the time of Kaikes; Joseph Allein, James Heys and W ia. King taught in the same cause betere the time of Raikes; Cardinal Borromeo, in the 16th century, and several other persons conceived the idea of Sunday schools and acted on it to some extont, but it was not un- til 1789 and the time of Robert Raikes that the idea began to take general hold of the pub- lic mind.”

The horses in the numerous private stables in Boston and vicinity are suffering from the threat distemper which recently appeared. The muscles of the throat be- come inflamed, the anima! becomes incap- able of swallowing, and seen after the muscles of the bedy are paralyzed, and death ensues. The cause is said to be rainy, irregular weather. No cure can be found.

There was a small earthquake at Ottawa, Ontario, a night or two ago. This is the result of high tariff protection. The duty on earthquakes is so much that it dees not pay to import them from South Ameri- ca, and so the Canucks have to depend upon the home made article. Of course the earthquake business is only m its infaney yet in the Dominion, but by and by, when things are fairly established it is expected that the Canada quakes will equal the im- ported article. Thereis nothing like foes- tering home industries.— Detroit Free Press.

The Belgian Acadetay of Medicine has received a report on the researches made by Dr. Fabre regarding diseases to which coal miners are especially liable. He finds |tiat as coal abserks rapidly up to 100 times
